It was just like Covid, where the cure was worse than then disease.

You cannot appreciate the magnitude of Magic announcing he had HIV.

I had just taken him with 1st pick in my fantasy basketball draft that year.

Before the popular weight loss pill got lost into the either you were able to tell people they should get Aids and no one cared.

Body positivity is gay.

There’s an excellent documentary series on the 80s and one episode was devoted to HIV/AIDS. It’s excellent. It really shows the fear and uncertainty during that time. Highly recommend if this is something that interests you. I last watched it on Netflix.

I was at LSU from 1982-85.

I do not recall anyone worrying about it or even really talking about it.

I can give you one instance where it affected our family. Brother was in 9th grade and started bleeding internally. Rushed to hospital and as it turned out had been bleeding internally for a week or so. Received something like 8 units of blood.

These units of blood were right before they started screening donors for HIV AIDS. It was scary. They tested him for several months before it was clear he did not get infected.

Apparently quite a lot of people were infected through blood transfusions before screening was required.

We started wearing gloves working on the ambulance. There had always been a box, but it was for show or “really nasty” things. HIV was a really nasty thing.

People in college in the early 90’s were definitely aware of it. While I was in college, the university as part of some outreach program had some guy in his mid 20’s come talk to us and explain that he had contracted it recently through unprotected heterosexual sex. You could tell it struck a cord with a lot of people. That was right around the time the movie Kids came out which was also pretty disturbing. I wouldn’t say there was paranoia if you were heterosexual and not an IV drug user but most of my friends were very aware of it.

If not for the MSM, I’d have never heard of AIDS.

Much like it is today. People lived their lives and tried to avoid risky behavior.

Bull fricking shite. We were constantly being told we could get it from straight sex and even from touching / ingesting some blood, spit or other bodily fluids.

Don't forget about the toilet seats. They were supposedly a super spreader.

I still remember the first time I heard about AIDS. It was on the ABC show 20/20, which was appointment TV to my momma. They did a segment on this mysterious new disease among homosexuals called “AIDS” that was speeding like wildfire among their kind. This was about 1982 or 83. I was either 12 or 13 and didn’t pay it much attention. I remember after that the media started making a big deal about it. Personally, since I’m not homo and didn’t hang around homos, I didn’t really worry about it.

I was close with a family from Louisiana who had a son who was a flight attendant out of Houston. He was gay and he after contracting AIDS, he was one of the very first people to die from it in America.

In fact, when he died the doctors told his family it was pneumonia, and nothing else.

I remember CBS News did a special on AIDS shortly after that and it scared the crap out of me, even as a kid.

Initially folks believed you had to be homosexual to acquire it, which is really stupid when you think about how it was transmitted. Slowly but surely we began to learn more about it and by the time the kid died from it after being treated with dirty dental tools, folks began to wake up.

Ryan White - innocent victim contracted the disease from a blood transfusion

Rock Hudson - first big name celebrity to die from AIDS, closeted homosexual but could have contracted the disease from a blood transfusion during heart surgery.

Eazy-E - 11 children with 8 different baby mommas, refused treatment because he didn't want to be mistaken as a punk. More than likely got it from lots of unprotected sex.

It was a wild time and was all over the news. I also don't believe that Magic Johnson ever had HIV. I think he got a strain of VD that's never been seen before.

Were people afraid of gay white men?
i grew up in Monroe in the 80s. I woulda had to drive for a thousand miles to find an openly gay man.

Even at that we were all pretty sure we were going to die from aids somehow. We still were having sex, but we had weighed the odds.

Then a couple years later no body ever mentioned it again

Randy Shilts's book And The Band Played On is a fascinating, terrifying, sad read about the crisis.
