i grew up in Monroe in the 80s. I woulda had to drive for a thousand miles to find an openly gay man.

You watched one on local KNOE TV growing up. John Dennison. Blew my mind when I found out in the 90's. Obviously he kept it quiet back then.

My father died of AIDS in 1994. He was mid 40s. Unprotected sex with a lady he met in a bar.

Was it a Thai bar?

The estimated risk of female-to-male HIV transmission from insertive vaginal sex is about 4 per 10,000 exposures (0.04% per act) when the female partner has HIV and is not virally suppressed.

Wow. This is 100% accurate. I have a couple on my street.

Carolla has talked about this for years. I'm paraphrasing, but WeHo where there were a ton of gay men with houses was exponentially better than Van Nuys? or whatever hoods full of straight white/latino residents.

Believe it or not in the med laboratories we didn't even wear gloves 95% of the time. A little blood on our lab coat just meant we were working hard. The AIDS came along, thank you non-heterosexuals, and we were forced to wear them 100% of the time. We were pretty worried about it in the lab.

The movie “Philadelphia “ with Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington . Excellent movie about discrimination of someone who was diagnosed with AIDS. Hanks won Academy Award.

It was a gay (or illegal IV drug user) disease until Ryan White got it through a blood transfusion. It was (and still is) an STD (frick STI) that is overwhelmingly confined to gays and illicit IV drug users.

All the guys thay got vasectomies in the 70s were pissed.

I suppose he could've lied to me.

He was the least gay person I've ever known. Avid outdoorsman.

He remarried and had 2 other kids.

My friend’s uncle’s cousin picked up a beautiful girl one night at a bar. They had sex all night. When he woke up in the morning the beautiful girl was gone. He walked into bathroom to take a piss, and written in red lipstick on the mirror was:
I enjoyed the night, welcome to my world of AIDS! We were very worried and scared we could get it as well.

The medical community knew from the beginning that AIDS was tightly linked to the promiscuous gay male life style because those men suddenly were dying in large numbers of rare cancers and lung infections. To the general population it wasn't immediately clear how restricted the risk of infection was. What if your girl friend's previous partner had been " identifying as straight" but having an occasional homosexual liason? Not all cultures apply the terms straight and gay the same.

Well done movies about that era are: The Philadelphia Story, Dallas Buyers Club, The Band Played on, Angels in America.

I sat in class in 2008 and was told "look around the room, 1 in 4 of you will contract HIV/AIDS". What a fricking sham of propaganda.
