There is no solution to homelessness, because that is just the lifestyle that some people choose. Some choose drugs and some just choose not to follow society's rules. Unfortunately, once you make those bad decisions that lead to homelessness, it is exceedingly hard to back out of that lifestyle.

Homelessness in cities and towns should be outlawed. Homeless people should be shipped to uninhabited/unpopulated areas and given meager rations and help there. Anyone choosing homelessness should know this is what they are choosing, a bleak existence far from population, surrounded by other homeless people with little or no luxuries or access to drugs and alcohol.

Sure but you just made those numbers up

I don’t know if it’s quite 80% but it’s the vast majority. I think if you combine mental illness and substance abuse, it’s probably 90+% of the cause.

I think % homeless people from losing their jobs is in the single digits.

quote:

A survey conducted by the United States Conference of Mayors asked 25 cities to share the top reasons for homelessness in their region. 68% reported that substance abuse was the number one reason among single adults. According to a separate research survey, two-thirds of the homeless who were interviewed reported that abuse of drugs and/or alcohol was a major cause of their homelessness. Very similar numbers are reported for homeless military veterans suffering from a substance use disorder

quote:

It is estimated that about two-thirds of the perpetual homeless have a primary substance use disorder or other chronic health condition, according to the Office of National Drug Control Policy. In addition, roughly 30% of people experiencing chronic homelessness have a serious mental illness.

Michael Schulenburg got 3rd in California’s Governor race running solely on fixing homelessness.

2 great quotes from him regarding the issue.

“Conservatives have the brains to figure out the cause of the problem, but don’t have the heart to fix it.

Liberals have the heart to tackle the problem but don’t have the brains to figure out the root cause and fix it for good. “

And

“Liberals want to give them the carrot without the stick. Conservatives want the stick without the carrot.”

I think it's a GREAT idea!

It continues to show, definitively, how bad the problem of opioids truly is and it gives other cities a geographic location to quietly ship their addicts off to.

Win-win... except for the people who live there, but then you get what you vote for.

I would guess a significantly higher number than this.

If they would get a job that would probably solve that.

It gets worse before it gets better. It's not that cut and dry. And it might be different if the government invested the same amount of money in treating addiction as they do fighting a losing battle.

No real good solution IMO. Certain % want to live that way no matter what.

I don't know if it's that they want to, or that's just what they've accepted. A huge part of it is mental illness like other people have said.

Never going to happen.

You could give homeless people free houses and you would still have homeless people and those houses would be fricked beyond repair.

A certain percentage of the population will always be different enough to not value things like a roof over their head.

You can't throw someone in jail for not having a home, nor should you. Authoritarianism form the left and right is scary in this country.

If you want to solve a lot of our problems you put the cartels out of business by legalizing recreational drugs and then people could get clean, pure drugs with known dosages. You get rid of the black market and all the bad things that come with illicit markets. The cops will never like it. The prison owners will never like it. The ruling class won't go for it. But it would solve a lot of problems.

Clown take. “Poverty” has existed in every society and economic system in human history.

They surveyed Seattle homeless and I do believe 100% of adults were addicts.
Drugs are probably just a response to a mental issue.
Mental issues are probably due to drug/alcohol abuse and/or neglect by a family member
And so on. Would be interesting if someone plotted it out.

Best solution might be to round em up and put them into camps where they can dry up, get treatment, learn a skill, work and save money to buy a tiny home or something… no one would go for that. Property owners, tourists, sanitation workers, police, and business owners would like it.

There is none.

It dawned on me my freshman year at lsu seeing all the bums and gutter punks. They want to live like that. Those trash white kids just go town to town.

Fast forward to just recently with that guy in here looking for his brother. Same thing, he’s cool with digging through dumpsters and and being a drug addict even though he has a family has a child I believe. But his comments were I’ve never been this free before, he has no responsibility.

Now I get there are physically and mentally disabled people that can’t fend for themselves, but that’s not what’s happening with a lot of these people.
