Mississippi river doesn't start in the south
My bad. The article doesn't make it clear but it doesn't sound like they want to divert the river in Minnesota.

Living 50 miles south of New Orleans I sure did.

Louisiana’s resources must be paid for. Our governor better make damn sure UT/AZ pays for the resource.

He won’t. He will get rich but the state won’t benefit. It is the LA way

The fact that this story is not satire is just another sign that journalism has gone down the toilet. And that we, as a species, are fricked.

Gonna be a bunch of new jobs for dredging the lower part of the river constantly if they take water flow away because it’ll silt in faster with less flow

FTR I've been saying for years now they will forcibly take the south's water eventually. I mean they'll pay us for it but it'll be forced by the feds and the payments will be determined by the feds as well

Why would we care? This is only 8% of the Mississippi’s flow, and it would be for less than one year. After that it would be far less. This water would otherwise just be disgorged into the ocean.

Also, I think it’s unlikely western states would pay Mississippi and Louisiana anything, since those states don’t own the water.

1500 miles - I have little doubt this crosses a lot of “sacred land” that must not ever be disturbed.

I guess you’ve never heard of nor experienced unintended consequences? Robbing Peter to pay Paul?

There’s no way that diverting some of the Mississippi across the country to feed an overpopulated desert ends up good for all those involved on the long term

This would take 254 days to fill.”

I hope this person isn’t in a position of political authority.

The feds, state, and local govt are about to spend billions on two diversions specifically designed at getting more of the River into more areas in S. LA.

Man this is ripe with good shite.

I shouldn't live in hurricane country? You shouldn't live in the desert.

Now we are ok with pipelines?

I like my water and I want to keep it

Water can flow uphill?

Those pumps sure are going to have to be really big. Where's the juice come from?

Something tells me the last thing people around Lake Powell want is shitty, mud filled Mississippi river water to be pumped into their lake. Next they will ask us to build high flow filter plants to clear the water.

quote:

But desert defenders pushed back. John Neely of Palm Desert, California, responded: "All of these river cities who refuse to give us their water can stop snowbirding to the desert to use our water. The snowbirds commonly stay here for at least six months. Do they thank us for using our water? No. Do they pay extra for using our water? No. They’re all such hypocrites

These people are petty as frick

Until I see some true feasibility studies I don't see how you can just divert a river with no serious unintended consequences.

If people don't have water in the desert they should leave.
