I mean, is it a bad idea if the alternative is jumping to your death? I'll take my chances with the parachute as opposed to certain death

these are good for about 22 stories, and are made in New Orleans:

Safety Air Cushions (formerly SpaceWalk)

NYPD has a number of them, but they weren't used on September 11th, 2001 for a few reasons.

The average person would be much better off with 1,000ft of static rope and a harness/carabiner/figure 8.

BASE jump rigs are not cheap, $4k for a canopy and container.

BASE jumping from buildings in a city poses all sorts of problems for an experienced BASE jumper. Probably 99.99% of people just using it to jump out of a burning building would die most never getting their canopy inflated.

I have over 40 static line jumps, over 300 sport canopy jumps an 11 BASE jumps and unless I could get to the roof, and it had a place to get a running jump from the edge (they don't) I would die another way.

I assume he's talking about some dumb bastard panicking when Blanche burns her microwave popcorn 2 offices down. Busting out a window and skimming the side of the building for 60 stories.

OP doesn't realize how windy it is between those buildings. Odds are you would crash hard.

Still better than your other options.

Yeah, not sure why people are hung up about this. If you don't have it and jump, you die. If you do have it and jump, you might survive. It's not a hard concept at all, but it must be for some.

Dunno why every 30+ story building does not have this plus cheap safety harnesses on every roof. Cheap, easy to use and effective.

I was wondering last night, if 9/11 had happened post-modern cell phone proliferation what kind of videos would they have found on devices in the rubble.

People film everything these days. I bet we would find some of the most disturbing, end-of-the-line videos imaginable.

That was my morbid thought for the day.

Id invest in a parachute after 9-11 but chances are your going to get killed going to or from work.

And if the situation ever occurs where you need it you will be killed by everyone else in your office trying to take the parachute from you.

This never makes sense to me when it comes to things you could theoretically prepare for.

Couldn't the same be said for actually having a parachute and surviving because it's not your time?
