1. Why would I trust anyone from the British Dental Association? Have you ever seen their teeth over there? The French paint, the Italians sculpt, the Americans invent, and the Brits have bad teeth.

2. If you want to really hit obesity in America, target what you can buy with EBT, food stamps, etc. But that would be waycism.......

3. There should be some industry incentives to get rid of high fructose corn syrups. Back in the day, we ate sugary everything, but people were still mostly skinny. Since the advent of HFCs and other artificial sweeteners, we have seen obesity get out of control.

They should tax the corporations that produce to pig slop sugary garbage and then tax the people that eat the sugary garbage.

Unhealthy people eventually become a burden on the welfare state and we might as well get ahead of the issues.

My health insurance premiums should be half as much as the morbidly obese person next to me in line at the grocery store.
This.

And Life Insurance premiums too.

I make a lot of great choices and do a lot of work to keep myself in wonderful shape.

The insurers of both my life & health* have benefitted because of this effort and cost on my part.

*I didn't see a primary care physician at all in my 40s and over the first half of my 50s. When I did go in (because I knew I should get a colonoscopy), my doc said he hoped his numbers would be like mine when he got to age 56. Seven years later I'm still not on any meds and I go for "wellness visits" twice a year.

Self-reported "reduction" via surveys is laughable proof but typical of those that advocate for such nonsense.

I think instead of a tax we should be just regulating manufacturers to stop putting so much damn sugar in stuff. You could put half the sugar in a coke and it would taste the same.
Alas, Big Food has a large lobbying budget so nothing ever changes.

100%. It's insane the amount of slop they're allowed to put in our food that would never fly in the EU

The sugar industry screwed up lots of people in this country
It is amusing when statements like this are made. As if individuals have no agency and are all victims.

This won’t work here because food stamps aren’t taxed and every kid is on food stamps because 100% of kids are born to single moms

US should do this

And as soon as the US does this, they will notice an immediate increase in tax revenues. As a result, they will increase spending across the board as they well project that this increase will continue. The consumer will begin to adjust their diets as the sugar consumption tax is making their favorite foods too expensive. The government will then notice a decrease in expected revenue and will now need to find the next place to increase taxes so they can balance their budgets.

We made it very cheap to use engineered and artificial ingredients in our food. And these ingredients, like seed oils, are probably terrible for us.

This.

I hate to say a tax is necessary, but what lever do we pull to stop either production or consumption? As long as we can't regulate production better the only remaining solution is figuring out how to change consumption habits.

Crony capitalism at it's finest in most industries. Additionally, you know the Medical companies love the lifelong customers. We have created a situation where there is no real interest in a solution.

All of you who think this is a great idea are clueless. Do you really think Government would stop with sugar? You don’t think more taxes on beer, wine, meat or whatever it is that affects you won’t be next? Any Government that controls your healthcare controls you. I have said this before, “If You Give A Mouse A Cookie” should be required reading.

This. If the US gov will stop subsidizing HFCS and give it the criticism it deserves there would be immediate health impacts.

Taxpayers shouldn’t be funding anyone’s healthcare. It’s bad enough we have Medicaid and LaChip. If anything, finds should be distributed back to healthy taxpayers.

The article certainly conveys that reality.

Saturated fat’s connected to higher LDL. Tax products with saturated fat.

Oh you like highly palatable foods that have a balance of fat and sugar? That’ll be an extra tax.

Recommended fiber intake is 25g/day for women and 35g/day for men. All low fiber foods will now be taxed to incentivize eating more high fiber foods.

It’ll never end.

Could not agree more....and my homeowners insurance should be about 1/10th of that homeowners along the gulf coast pay and about 1/10th of what homeowners pay out west. Why should I pay for fat people and people so stupid they build a home near the coast, below or at sea level or in an area known for wildfires and tornados? frick them bastards....
