My general rule of thumb is always voting against taxes, but this isn't the worst tax I've heard. Taxes on sugar in prepackaged/processed foods would probably be a massive net win for the country.

What about high fructose corn syrup?
Regular cane sugar isnt great for you but HFCS is way worse
Corn gets a bad rap because it is heavily subsidized, but Corn sugar is Beet Sugar is Cane Sugar is Sugar. I don't think any of these are worse than the other.
Even eating a ton of fruit will get you a ton of sugar, but with a dose of fiber to help flush it out.

it has completely different ingredients outside the US
No, it isn't that much different and has about 0.5g less sugar. If you actually had some next to US-label Heinz ketchup you think it was just a different brand like Hunt's.

My health insurance premiums should be half as much as the morbidly obese person next to me in line at the grocery store.
I don't think you can base it solely on the weight of a person. Sure, typically plays a huge part but we do need to explore claims versus just simply the weight of someone.

Is that the same as high fructose corn syrup, which seems to be the really bad thing in foods??

Then advocate for legislation that would tax or penalize food producers who insist on cramming the shite into everything they sell. Incentivize them to make healthier options and to make their unhealthy products not as bad. Do not advocate for even more taxes on the people, especially when it is a tax that will almost certainly open up a whole new can of worms (even more taxes).

My two kids and all their peers despised Big Mike for this. They all went from eating a fair portion of their school lunches to either throwing most of them away or just bringing something from home. A study done at the time showed this was nationwide, with school lunch waste increasing something like 50% after Michelle's plan was implemented.

I dunno about the US doing it but certainly if you have socialized medical care then trying to get people to stop sabotaging their health is pretty important for taxpayers.

What do they use the tax money for?

I hate the tax idea as much as I hate the sugar lobby, and the politicians that do their bidding.

It’s not sugar. It’s HFCS. Sugar isn’t the issue.
Really?
quote:
The role of fructose in metabolic syndrome has been the subject of controversy, but as of 2022, there is no scientific consensus that fructose or HFCS has any impact on cardiometabolic markers when substituted for sucrose.[49][50] A 2014 systematic review found little evidence for an association between HFCS consumption and liver diseases, enzyme levels or fat content.[51]
For those of you that failed Biology 099 in college, at the molecular level where it actually counts, the body doesn't care if you are gorging on table sugar or corn syrup, it only cares that you are gorging period. You fatties blaming HFCS...

Well no sh!t. Econ 101 taught me if you want to decrease the consumption of something raise it’s price.
Posted on 7/10/24 at 7:12 pm to StringedInstruments
I'm fine as long as they don't mess with booger sugar.

I don’t mind eating real cane sugar, it’s the lab-grown fake stuff they call sugar that I steer clear of
