Look up spinal muscular atrophy.

Scruffy has had multiple patients. It’s horrible.

Locked In Syndrome

A friend of my grandparents had this for about 6 years before her death. She had a massive stroke & was unable to move or say a word. It's something that just gets worse the more you think about it.

My own personal version of hell is similar:
-All friends & family dead
-No way to communicate or connect with anyone new
-total isolation & nobody to share any bit of life with

Definitely this…. But making it that much worse: let’s pretend that hypothetically, you’re an 84 year old man that’s still 100% active and cognitive, relatively no serious medical issues besides controlled hypertension. Still driving, and proudly taking care of his yard like it’s part of a country club. Then you take a crazy fall, exiting the shower, and flukishly land in a way, that leaves you paralyzed below the chest.

So now you’ve still got all of your faculties(mentally), but since you’re the patriarch of an entire family, and adored by literally everyone, you have to lay in the bed, essentially in a prison that happens to be your body, and death doesn’t look as close as it should be. Dude has to sit there and pretend to be happy in this existence, because at any given time, you have 6-8 family members holding a vigil at your bedside, telling you “how blessed and lucky you are to still be alive!” Never mind you’re still negotiating the fact that you lost 100% of your independence 2 months ago, but the doctors are amazed by how healthy you are, besides the fact you can’t move anything besides your face, no longer allowed to eat/drink etc. so the only pleasures you had left as a human, are now gone.

Literally just trapped. But still forced to put on a smile and act happy, so that the family that adores you, won’t remember you as an angry old man that just wants to die because he lost all his physical powers.

Almost 15 years in the medical field now, and I’ve seen so many unfortunate events…… but I can still think of nothing worse than this.

That's a #1 fear... even for a quasi-hermit like me.
