RIP Lambda Chi and Theta Xi. Rumors abound that GOAT Kappa Sig could be next due to some summer time shenanigans not yet made public.

The pussification continues…

So weak.
quote:

I would also try to send them to public school for k through high school. The idea of spending $100k before college seems crazy to me.

Exactly

I worked construction jobs in the summer in order to pay my tuition

Always a way

But almost nobody's pride, including the parents, let them take this path

Just got done with one ole miss and one uab graduate school. One worth it one back at home figuring it out

It’s not easy these days. Have 4 with college degrees (a couple with Masters/Doctorates). The others self employed and struggling.

ETA: I have 6 daughters.

I’m not doubting you but that’s a BR and LSU issue, and not normal. Certainly I know it’s an LSU board but it’s not fair to say all universities are like that. Most of the bigger state schools in the southeast (not including Texas) you can find realistic housing within 30 mins of campus. This includes FSU, UTenn, UGA, Gainesville, etc in somewhat larger cities. I’m not saying it’s easy. But once you take out good school zones finding houses in good enough areas is fairly easy. Again, I go back to all the kids I know that really had basically 0 parent help in college. They found a way and almost none of them lived right on campus. Most had to drive in. These days with online classes and the ability to schedule classes on campus just 2-3 days a week that’s really not asking much.

quote:

I don’t see any examples of advice from parents. If the advice is “get a loan”, then the kids should know the definition of the word “loan”.

Can’t argue with this. My dad didn’t finish college (made more money than I ever will being self employed) but he made me promise him to finish college. I did and did it my way(with some military help). Very happy I did.

That was the point of my thread, which has been horribly blown off course.

Lol, in a perfect world. Why people on here expect others to be like them is retarded. Myself included.
quote:

Eh, your take is kind of retarded.

Not against you but this is life. Improvise, adapt and overcome. It absolutely sucks right now and it’s not going to get better anytime soon.
quote:

Whats the good areas for student to live at now?

With today’s prices, none.
quote:

I do think way too many kids are going to college and if those kids went to work straight from high school, tuition would go down

I wish you were right but it’s like everything else, high as hell and it would take drastic measures to change it.
quote:

Eh, your take is kind of retarded.

Ah, an expert in retardation speaks.

Listen up everybody, the SME on retardation speaks…

ETA: is that what your significant other made you say?
quote:

, i would talk to the kid about a different line of jobs.

My parents paid for mine so least I could do is pay for my kids. I saw the rising cost and started saving when they were born. Told them both that if they get scholarships that I’d give them the balance when they graduate.

That’s great, no sarcasm but that isn’t the norm. I would hate to send my kids to college now. Still have one getting her Master’s and possibly Doctorate at NYU but geez! Like everything else, it’s too expensive!

it's a matter of publix afety

Damn right, need that afety!

The issue is not everyone is able to do that.

Bingo. Every situation is different.

Mine did not either but they could not afford to I can afford to help my kids. Key word is help. They pull some of the weight as well.

My parents helped when they could (gas, groceries, etc.) but it was never expected.

ETA: I did give my oldest what I had in the Post 9/11 GI Bill. I did help somewhat.
quote:

Just my take, but my wife and I did everything we could to save for both the kids' education and our own retirement. Not because we owed it to them, but because we love them and want to give them every white privilege there ever was in order to have a leg up on everyone else and build their future. We did without a lot in order to save. When my daughter graduated, she lived here for two years. We didn't charge her rent. My take is I'm happy as hell to have them here to visit with. I don't need their money to pay my mortgage. She learned, too She saved almost everything she earned for two years and when she moved out and away to another city, she left with a six-figure nest egg to get started. We're doing the same for our son. But you're right. You don't owe it. You just have to love them and WANT future generations of your family to be educated and be good people.

You aren’t wrong if you can do that. Many can’t do that. It is what it is.

Absolutely nothing wrong with that.
quote:

It's not F them kids. Its teach them independence. Most us in LA are already a $100K+ in on our kids education before college. I didn't say parents shouldn't help their kids or pay for college if they want to. I'm saying the kids aren't entitled to have their parents pay for college and there shouldn't be an expectation that parents pay for college. I feel most strongly about this when the conversation comes up about means testing TOPS or other scholarship programs. How can you means test a non working (career) independent adult based on parent's income. In my opinion that's BS.

This

This what? Another coddler who is scared to make their kids understand that life isn’t easy?
