There’s a Name for Going on a Date Mostly for the Meal — and 30% of Americans Have Done It

Gen Z and younger millennials reported the behavior most often, but they’re far from the only ones doing it.

A recent survey found that 30% of U.S. adults have accepted a date primarily for a free meal or drinks, a behavior many term a “foodie call.”
Gen Z and younger millennials reported foodie calls at the highest rate, but at least one in four respondents in every generation said they had accepted a date primarily for the meal or drinks.
Experts say foodie calls can reflect a range of motivations, from seeking a free meal to being unsure about romantic attraction but interested enough in the restaurant or experience to accept the date.
Sharing a meal has long been central to dating, but as the cost of going out rises, food can play a more complicated role in whether someone accepts an invitation. Sometimes, the restaurant — or the prospect of a free meal — is part of the appeal.

According to a recent DatingAdvice survey of 1,016 U.S. adults, 30% of respondents said they had accepted a date primarily for a free meal or drinks. The behavior is commonly known as a “foodie call,” with Gen Z and younger millennials reporting it at the highest rate.

In no way does that actually equal 30% of Americans.

Friend owns a fine dining restaurant. Gets a laugh out of the women who hang out in the bar like vultures as they look to scam a guy out of a free meal.

If they provide an hour's company to some lonely sucker, they are giving something in exchange for the food.

Why on earth would a man pay for dinner on a casual first date in 2026?

So a fine dining restaurant where unescorted women hang out, waiting for a guy to buy them a meal? Not buying it. A bar with food, maybe, but not a fine dining restaurant. This would assume that single men are going to nice restaurants alone, hoping to meet someone at the bar?

Why are you fearing for your son? Given that most kids today are living with their parents until they’re in their 30s, you will probably be the one paying for that meal.

I bailed because I don't need that drama, but wtf goes through these idiots minds????

For any of you with parents or grandparents in The Great Depression, you could score if you had a Po Boy to offer your date.

Amateurs. Don't ever take a woman to a restaurant for a first date.

Coffee or Happy Hour drinks only.

Some of the best advice I have ever been given was to never go on a date with someone you would not marry.
