The shite some of you guys find the energy to worry about astounds me
Poor people got poor ways. I’m with OP. I’ve had so much random shite screw up my families life, I feel like I need a bajillion dollars laying around to cover uncertainties

I have insurance on it so I don’t worry about losing it. Told my wife just give them your jewelry and we’ll replace it.

Like when I hear someone paid $30k or more for a ring, my head spins. And I know sky is the limit for some.
Find a woman who won’t let you spend nearly that much. Even if you are rich this is good advice

Exactly. I paid around $7k for my wife's nearly perfect 4 carat lab ring. A "real" diamond that size would've been double the price and would've had flaws.
When we go out for dinner or parties, she's constantly getting compliments. Her friends with mined diamonds do not get compliments often.
Lots of justification for thirty thousandaire trashy shite ITT

Has to make you at least a little worried, no?
The odds of someone stealing someone's ring while they are wearing it are astronomical. About 1 in 14,000 chance of being robbed of ANYTHING anywhere in public in the US.....that includes places like national forests and high crime areas in the inner city. Unless you live or spend a lot of time in one of the latter your odds are nearly none.
The things people "worry" about never ceases to amaze me. I can't imagine living with the irrational fear that someone or something is about to "get" me any minute. There once was a time when a sitting President told Americans, in a moment when we were in about as close as to an existential challenge as we have ever been, that fear was the only thing we had to fear....and it was true then and now. Irrational fear steals an awful lot of joy from people every day and that theft is far greater than material possessions. Unless you are in an area where crime is common, and that is a very small area of the world and the US, being the victim of any crime is highly unlikely. shite can happen but driving a car is about as risky as anything most people will ever do in their lives.....and I see the way most people drive, their need to lock doors and carry guns and have safes is silly given that they hurl themselves down the road at break neck speeds and do all manner of stupid shite without ever thinking about it.

There is no bigger rip off than buying diamonds from a jewelry store.
I paid a little less than $3k for my wife's engagement ring in 1992. It was a LOT of money then, probably $10K today, adjusted for inflation. It was equivalent to about a months salary - I do not know what the "formula" for that is but there is one, jewelry stores know it and make a big deal out of it - I think then it was about 2 months salary but I am not certain. The store we bought it at has been in business over 100 years in Atlanta...100 years then. Serves alcohol while you're shopping, the while spiel. They also GUARANTEE that they will buy that ring back for the purchase price as long as they are business LOL. If they are in business in 2092 they would give whoever winds up with that ring $3k LOL...I doubt they would even need proof of purchase, even 5 years after purchase. They are about as big a rip off as can be found in American business, and that is saying something.

My wife wanted a lab grown because it was massive.

But my wife has stopped wearing her real ring when we go out at night or travel and wears a cheap ring from Amazon.
If we are talking about the safety of the person wearing it, then the cost of the ring or whether it is real or fake is irrelevant. It only matters if a criminal thinks it is real and valuable.

That's getting off cheap bro. Lock in, grind and buy nice things for your wife. It's called growing up.

People are getting married later these days, that usually means more money. 10k-20k seems pretty reasonable for something they will love and wear every day for the rest of their lives. 30k and up is probably for pretty wealthy people. You mention down payment, but 30k would cover down payment and closing costs for roughly a 100k house. The national median home price is 4x that.

I bought an exceptional ring for my wife when we got engaged. Like you said to each his own. But for certain things we do we have a system. Both of us have what we call stunt doubles. They are simple silver bands that we both wear when we go someplace that does not require flashy stuff or if there is a chance it may get lost or damaged. She wears her regular ring daily etc. But going to the beach or whatnot we use the stunt doubles.

I have some pretty rich friends that are having daughters get engaged these days and the girls and their future husbands have money.
None of them have engagement rings that cost over $10k.
None of them have engagement rings that cost over $10k.

We just got some nice silicone bands to wear when we travel, do outdoors work/sporting/gym stuff, etc.

First time homebuyers (anyone that hasn't owned a home in the last three years) only need 3% down.
Be sure to encourage ponying up for that $110k Escalade, you know, so the wife can show her friends how much her husband loves her.

5k on a 2-2.5ct lab grown is plenty enough to have that wow factor and make her feel good about it.
You should pay less than that for a 2 - 2.5 carot lab grown. Expect to pay $2-$3.5k for that size

If your fiancé is only happy with that expensive of a ring, you should not marry her. I just spent $5k for a very nice ring.
This is an example of why the placement of “only” is important. I would have placed it after the “happy” ideally, but definitely not after the “with.”
