This is 100% true. My girlfriend is from El Salvador and has tones of friends and family there. The people have very mixed feelings about Bukele. The country was extremely dangerous before he took power. Theft, bribery, kidnappings, murders were part of everyday life for the citizens.

Yes, he cleaned it up and for that they’re very thankful. At the same time, many of them have fiends or family that has been caught in his wide net and has basically disappeared into the system with no contact or real way to prove innocence.

I’m sure some of that is people not wanting to admit that their loved one was a gangster but no doubt innocent people are behind bars. Double edged sword but something had to be done. The life she describes before Bukele would be a terrifying way to live.
