I have one in that zone.
If helps, we just roll on to the next thing with them. But you are not wrong. Catching crabs on beach at night and building sand castles are the good stuff. But so are the next things with them. Ride the wave!

My sons are 38 and 40. Two grandsons and two granddaughters, and I love my daughters in law, I’m at my absolute happiest when we’re all under the same roof. When you look back at your life, raising kids seems to represent such a small period-but it’s everything.

I did not mean to judge.
It sounds like it is more than sports; just the overall feel for him with high school, sports, and future farmers.
Sounds like he’s supervised or at least has many friends and relatives that care about him.

On one hand that’s pretty fricking weird. You only have a few short years before they go off to college and then wherever and it’s tough when they leave - missing out on that is…a decision.
But I like to be objective and optimistic - when he goes off to college, your son will be light years ahead of his peers regarding independence and taking care of himself. That’s huge.

There may not be a hard rule on how to parent, but rule number one includes actually being a parent. No nosey aunt or former classmate superintendent can fill that void

I’m similar to you but off by a couple months. Getting wrecked is an understatement and everything becomes such a blur, especially with the exhaustion. I feel like I’m missing everything for numbers 2-3 I got to experience and remember so vividly from the first born’s first year and a half.

It’s not the same bc instead of talking g about dolphins and mermaids and making sand castles and getting buried in the sand to talking about college and bf/gfs and cars and adult stuff
