I suppose you don’t regard the OP as taking a “victory lap” too soon though give that since then Sweden has not only begun to see a surge of cases/deaths, but they have started to roll out a (light) lockdown in response.

Sweden didn’t continue as normal. That’s a myth. They didn’t do all that we did, but they didn’t keep the status quo.

I think the United States will have them beat on unemployment once the dust settles.
Fact is...Sweden is still a functioning society, albeit limited in nature. Most of the rest of the world, including us, can't claim that.

Now do the numbers for the 2017-18 influenza season here in the United States. Almost 1 million hospitalizations and roughly 61,000 deaths.

Correct, but also remember, that 61,000 was for an entire flu season. Meaning those deaths accumulated between the months of October-April, with a peak in the months of December-February. Also nice to take to account that the 2017-18 season was particularly hard. Hell, that was the first time I ever had the flu. But not only did I catch it, but my fiance, mother, brother, friends, roommate, multiple coworkers all came down with Flu that year. I have never seen that happen. I even had a family member pass because of it that year. All of this is anecdotal of course, but the point is is that the 61,000 number you posted is definitely not an average flu season at all. The CDC website even says so.
But since we did have 61,000 die from the flu that year, now imagine how much higher that number could have been if we had no vaccine, nor viable treatment options. It could have been much much higher. That much much higher number is the number we are trying to avoid.

A suggestion that receives overwhelming compliance by the populace has the same effect on viral spread as a mandatory lockdown. It is very, very, very unlikely that the same suggestion can be made here and achieve compliance from any significant percentage of the population.

Especially ironic because the referred counter point claim I wasn’t going to argue against b/c it was just my educated layman’s assessment of the situation is starting to look really unlikely (i.e fewer than 60k total). I’ll be sure to make the relevant bumps if it does turn out to be accurate. (BTW the current daily death rate is double what the average needs to be for the prediction to occur.)

Yeah...I'd take Sweden's situation over ours any day of the week. End the charade and start opening the country back up.
Except the US is mostly over the hump and the Sweden is just getting started.

Sweden is not testing for CoVid 19. They have only reported performing 74,600 tests. Ignorance is bliss?

Peak is usually in Dec and extends to Feb.
The vast majority of deaths, likely greater than 90%, occur within the flu season.
To say that the deaths were over 12 mos is disingenuous and a distortion.
They report the data yearly, but that does not mean the deaths were liberally spread over a year.

The point of the post though is to point out that the vast majority of the 2017-18 deaths were likely within a much more narrow window than people are selling it as.
Let’s say they used the 8 month window.
I would highly suspect that the first two and the last two months were not even remotely as deadly as the middle four, which is to be expected because the dispersion of cases would have a rise and a fall.
It would be very interesting to see what percentage of that “61,000” occurred over the 3-4 peak months.
Stating that “61,000 died over 12 months” is technically correct, but very, very disingenuous.

It is yeah. It’s important to remember those aren’t tested deaths, though. It’s an estimation kinda like how you see New York starting to make up their corona deaths. There’s like 10-20k actual positive flu deaths annually
