Speaking of fatigue - adult children are the worst

And this spans all races. We’ve done our part. Worked our asses off trying to instill character, work ethic, core values, etc.
This generation has to be the absolute laziest, most out of touch, zero work ethic, zero concern of how they may negatively impact others while always feeling entitled to everything with zero effort given.
Just this past week, we had our 19 year of “adult” manchild leave the front door unlocked and open (it’s a miracle the dog didn’t escape), left the gas stove on for who knows how long, and left the refrigerator open for who knows how long.
We punish him by not allowing time with friends, take away the things that matter most to him (phone and other electronics) and he starts doing what he is required to do but only for a short while. Then it’s rinse & repeat. And naturally when he fricks up we get attitude.
I tell him all the time that we will treat him consistent with the age that he acts. So we keep treating him like a 5 year old.
WTF is wrong with him? I have no clue how to get him to truly give a flying shite about anything important. My only recourse is to throw him out in the street and let him truly fend for himself but the wife is a long way from being ok with that. I’m ready though. I just can’t take anymore of this bullshite.

Toss her also. Many problems solved.

Get your wife’s boyfriend to beat him like you should have done to him years ago.

Sounds like you are a failure as a parent.

You should join the social security thread

Likely parenting but it seems you’ve spent zero time on self reflection

You are facilitating this behavior by treating him like a 12 year old. Treat someone like a child, they'll act like a child.
I can't imagine a 19 year old living in my house, much less paying for his cell phone and electronic devices.

WTF? Yeah you failed him as a parent. Kick his arse out.

Are you his income stream?
Stop giving him $$. Make him get a job. Fine his arse every time he does dumb shite. Leaving the door open would piss me off the most.

Drop him off at the recruiters -- let him pick which service. Wish him good luck.

Sounds like his parents failed him

Could always threaten him with an over the counter drug test.
Those types of things sound like the types of mistakes someone would make while high or drunk .

This honestly sounds completely like your fault.
My same 4 year old along with her fellow 4-8 year old friends that come over daily know to shut the door every time or the animals will get out.
If he paid for his own utilities, food and phone bill I guarantee this wouldn't happen.

We punish him by not allowing time with friends

Actually, it sounds like you do

THAT is what you have to do as hard as it may be. He's 19...not 9. He's an adult who is lawfully allowed to engage in all of the things necessary to support ones self (obtain employment, drive a vehicle, buy/rent a home, etc.)
If you are going to allow a 19 year old to live like a 9 year old and "punish" him like you would a 9 year old, then don't be surprised if he acts like a 9 year old.

Are his friends any better? Unfortunately if he has dead beat friends his best option might be military or to start over somewhere else. The old adage you are who you associate with is very true.
On the other hand 19 year olds are dumb and immature. Make him work an extremely labor intensive job and he'll grow up quick

But they don’t do stupid shite because they are always studying, they work and contribute. Plus they help me a lot with the younger kids. They help a lot. And it will be sad when they go but it’s time. The 21 yo will graduate in May from LSU and I hope he gets a job out of state.

Stop enabling him. By paying for a phone and other electronics, and providing free rent is what is making him lazy at 19 years old, he is not a child anymore. Make him get a job, get an education, or perhaps have him man up and join the military.
