This was in the tea leaves. John Kennedy wrote an op-ed about something similar this some months ago. Basically the money goes with the kid anywhere they want to go - public or private.

I'm not really sure what to think of it but the current public school system in Louisiana is keeping the status quo and that status quo is not good.

I read it’s 100% phased out at 150k. I don’t know anyone with household income less than 150k that sends kids to private school

I don't think that is accurate. Both bills, SB313 and HB745 have the following categories:

160% Students with exceptionalities (special needs)
80% family income <250% poverty level
55% "any other student"

"school choice"

Good rule of thumb for any legislation at any level of government is, the more innocuous the name sounds, the shittier it actually is.

Poster above says it goes away at $150k.

I didn't see that but I did see that households making above $125k won't see any money until year 3 of the program. I'd be shocked if it lasts that long.

Unless the bill changed all students were eligible in 27-28, and there were only 3 different tiers

how many spots do they think the private schools will open up?
the good private schools are turning people away

I am not sure how this will affect the current private schools but I'd imagine that the fringe students intelligence-wise that currently go to private schools will lose their spots in the future to smarter kids that would have gone to public school otherwise.

But sending my kids to private school is how I keep them away from the poors.. Are you telling me the poors are going to be in my child's private school??

Not much private about that!!!

I'd imagine that the families that take advantage of this program will not be the poors but the middle class because the amounts they are funding per family is still not enough to cover full tuition. The families will still have to pony up some cash on there own.

In other states kids go to public schools, in this state kids go to private school.

You went to private school where i lived if you were uber religious or a retard that needed a smaller environment.

Why are yall acting like LA is the first and only state to pass school choice. They would be the 13th with multiple more to come in the next year or two and this has been going on for 5 years

Allowable Uses and Standardized Testing
House Bill 745 (HB 745) would establish an education savings account that families can use so long as they aren’t enrolled full-time in a public school. Account funds can be spent on qualifying education expenses, including private school tuition, tutoring services, educational supplies, contracted public school services, and transportation. The bill provides for the administration of standardized tests to participating students, which can include state tests required of public schools or a nationally norm-referenced test approved by the state school board.

The part in bold is what interests me as the parent of children in private school. It is my understanding that each school has to "opt-in" to the program and participate in State mandated testing. I don't see my children's school opting in to State testing.

I’m against the bill. It could end up destroying private schools. Then people pull out all together and home school.

How is the state going to address the fiscal cliff of the .45% tax that is rolling off next year with additional spending like this and the likelihood of the state looking to eliminate the state income tax?

Jeff and the boys and girls in Baton Rouge have some explaining to do. We might have a billion-dollar shortfall again.

Yea chances are if your kid already goes to a public school, the parent doesn’t gaf and won’t go thru the admissions process of a private school.

This will help the smart kids whose families can’t afford private and are being held back in public schools.

Seems like the goal of this bill is to get more control of all the private schools by the govt.

I’d prefer they stay out of having any say in private school matters. There’s a reason private schools exist and are so prevalent in LA.

If the sales tax is not renewed that will mean about a $400 million reduction to the state treasury. Not sure how this will be paid for
