Sounds like this is just going to make private schools up their tuition even more than they already do.

TOPS 2.0

Start with a “technology fee” and go from there.

the govt did a pretty good job of tearing em up.

Giving them a toehold into privates will doom them as well.

I agree. Any private school would be smart to opt out of this program.

When Arkansas recently launched their "school choice" plan, they found that in the first full year (2023) that 95% of the students in the program were not in a public school the year before. All you need to do is follow the money with almost all of these programs to see what they are about.

So 95% of the cash was just distributed to those already paying the tuition prior?

That's what's going to happen here, too. At least until some shitty new private schools appear to take money from the government cash cow.

And if I had a son, I’d probably avoid parochial schools.

It’s really easy to talk about what you would do with hypothetical children. More difficult when you’re asking yourself if you should send your actual son into an environment every day that you believe is bad for him.

Then put more funds into public schools. Wouldn’t it be great to have alot them them like this vs funneling into private?

You’re making an assumption that a lack of funds is what prevents bad public schools from becoming good public schools, but that’s incorrect. Funding isn’t the issue.

You want better public schools?
Instill discipline
Let boys be boys
Expel troublemakers
Reward good effort, punish bad effort
Don’t expect dumb kids to make good grades and go to college
Fire bad teachers who don’t try to be better
There are a million things you could do without spending any more money, but the public system is incapable of doing them.
You still wouldn’t fix the root causes of educational outcome disparities, but it would make the schools better.

Why don’t we fix public schools. Wouldn’t that be the better solution.

How do you intend we do that? The best students go to private school and no one is going to let their kids be the guinea pigs to test public education. How do you improve schools without the best students attending them?

Empower school administrators to kick out kids with behavioral issues without fear of losing funding. Repeat offender kids will be forced into online virtual academy school only, Chromebook (security deposit) and monthly stipend for internet provided. Acknowledge that some kids will have to be left behind for public education to flourish. Fully fund pre-k 4 programs for all kids to get a head start. Stop teaching a curriculum that revolves around kids passing a standardized test. End the experiment of inclusive classrooms (separate special education kids that are disruptive).

Nope, and I even addressed that in my statement that Louisiana is lowering the standard for becoming a teacher. Many areas have a shortage, and they are either fast-tracking people into the profession and paying them minimally or placing long-term subs in those professions. However, by and large, public schools have to meet a quota for certified teachers as it goes into their state score and to receive federal and state funding. This is why they are making it easier to become a teacher, such as accepting those with a two-year degree, removing the praxis requirement, and just having individuals take classes offered by the parish.

Private schools have limited capacity. What happens then?

We did as well .. granted that was many many years ago and things didn’t cost what they do now. I often wonder how we did it .. but we certainly did.

My ex wife worked with a girl in New Orleans. She had 3 jobs, couldn’t miss. She saved and used her tax returns to send her kid to private school. Her car broke down before her next job and my ex let her borrow hers so she’d make it till her day off to get her car looked at.

Sweet girl who valued her kid getting the best education she could afford.

Worst idea ever.

Co-mingling government funds with private school funds, what could go wrong?

Waiting list.

Its stupid because we all know whats going to happen. People arent going to send their kids to private school for the education, they are going to send them for the clout so they can tell their friends.

Private schools already cost more than 7.5k (most of them), and they have selective admissions, they could theoretically keep undesirables out without having to increase tuition. But, why would they pass up “free” money if they have no issues filling seats in their classrooms already? This is why they’ll increase tuition, not to keep undesirables out.

Once the school takes the funds they better expect to hear from the state as to what agenda to push.

Not an opinion. Take money and this happens. End of story.

Are you of the impression that people in low income areas think highly of private school kids?

I had a single friend growing up that went to public school through middle school. He switched to a private school for HS but hid this fact from his public school friends because he said they would rag on him very hard if they knew he was going to private school the following year. He also said he had to keep the fact that he made good grades a secret because being smart was "Gay".

That really is the issue with public schools in Louisiana. The smart kids feel pressure to be dumb because being smart is looked down upon.

Yeah if the money has any strings attached, I highly doubt the successful private schools will opt in to the program.

Youd be surprised.

Remember, the Catholic schools kick up 20% to the Vatican.

This is huge money for the Catholic church.

Its hard not to separate idiots from their money when the chance presents itself.
