The rest of a district’s operating expenses are paid by local property and sales taxes. Also, some additional money may come from other sources like the federal school lunch program, federal and state grants or programs like Mckenny Vento, and the legislature for teacher stipends.

Stipends that some districts hold in accounts to earn interest on before paying out. A stipend doesn't make up for a raise either; teachers have been promised raises for a while and never received one. Instead, they want to LOWER the standards to become a teacher in the state in order to combat the lack of teachers. Instead of just raising the pay and the standard to become a teacher, Louisiana goes the opposite direction. Wonder how some private schools will handle the fact that their teachers are not actually certified teachers.

Then put more funds into public schools. Wouldn’t it be great to have alot them them like this vs funneling into private? Private doesn’t mean good. Plenty of bad out there. And if I had a son, I’d probably avoid parochial schools.

That'll fix it.

Raising teachers' salaries would attract more quality individuals, and raising the standards along with the pay would also help. However, Louisiana is going in the opposite direction and is looking to lower the standards by removing the requirement of a 4-year degree and the praxis teachers take.

1. Private school parents are about to get screwed if this passes. Tuition is fixing to skyrocket to keep undesirables out.

Private schools already cost more than 7.5k (most of them), and they have selective admissions, they could theoretically keep undesirables out without having to increase tuition. But, why would they pass up “free” money if they have no issues filling seats in their classrooms already? This is why they’ll increase tuition, not to keep undesirables out.

So he admits that the state school system is so shitty that he’d rather pay for your kid to go to private school instead of investing the money to upgrade schools and give teachers raises?

He probably realizes that throwing money at the public school system isn’t going to fix it. The issue isn’t a lack of upgraded schools and teachers not making enough money, the issue is that a large percentage of parents in this state are losers. No amount of money going into public education is going to change that.

a student in elementary can literally scream f you and f you and f you multiple times an hour in elementary and federal laws protect them from being removed. There is no fixing this type of crap.

The teacher must just follow an iep for intervention. All the while class is constantly disrupted. Then add in the mandated curriculums and very little time is used to address real, committed students

Destroying public schools is a feature, not a bug

The vast majority of public schools in this state are already destroyed and the government can't do anything about it. No amount of money or great teachers can fix it. When a massive portion of your population doesn't care about education and doesn't respect authority then there isn't much you can do. Just hope to educate the students that actually want to learn which is a small %. Go spend a few days in a typical Louisiana public school and you'll see they are glorified day cares and it's not the fault of the teachers or the admin. The parents raising these kids dngaf about anything.

You think all the teachers in public school are certified

In my former career it was broken down to me that in a decent sized Louisiana parish that they had over 150 uncertified teachers in classrooms teaching by themselves.

Also the private schools that I've had contact with over the years have mostly certified teachers especially in the elementary grades.

Louisiana needs to attract more quality individuals to be parents. That is the only way to fix public school education in this state.

UM...public schools in East Baton Rouge are already destroyed. Why do you think we work so hard to send our kids to private school?

exactly. they are making this way more difficult than it is. just give tax credit for cost of tuition up to the cost of public school per student.

the govt did a pretty good job of tearing em up.

Giving them a toehold into privates will doom them as well.

It forces public schools to either improve

How? The students that remain in public school are those whose parents are too poor to afford private school (even with GATOR scholarship) and kids with behavioral issues or learning disabilities that private schools aren't forced to accept. At the end of the day, public and private schools play by different sets of rules.

You can't kneecap public schools and expect them to improve.
