Maybe I’m not following, but if it’s an extended warranty, wouldn’t it kick in after the factory warranty expired and not running concurrently with the factory warranty?

depends on the vehicle. I've had one before many years ago on a used Jeep when they were under Chrysler and it paid for itself.

In contrast, I bought a used Tundra from a Chevy dealership a couple years ago, paid cash, knew the previous owner, and had it checked out by my own shop. Even though I was paying cash, still had to deal with the Finance guy who put the hard sell on me to get their extended warranty. Politely declined a couple time and told him that i have two other Toyota for many years and lots of miles (more than the coverage period/miles he was trying to sell me) with nary a hiccup. His last attempt was saying that if the transmission goes out the warranty would pay for itself on that alone! I smiled and said, yeah but it's a Toyota ... now if it was a Chevy like you usually deal with I could see you point. Visibly pissed him off but he shut up after that.

Gotcha, I guess it depends on the wording of the warranty contract.

What I would add to the discussion is, the extended warranty at the dealer is negotiable. It is a highly marked-up product and the dealer has room to cut the cost to you.
If they won't budge, simply tell them to give you a printout of the contract and you will think about it later while exploring other options. Most times, they will come back with a reduced offer. It is up to you at this point whether it is worth it and/or it fits into your budget.
Also, If you agree with the price of the warranty and you want to purchase it at the same time with the vehicle andif you can, make it a separate transaction from the vehicle otherwise you will be paying the interest on it which cuts into the discount you got when you agreed to the cost.

Everyone's situation and needs are different. While an extended warranty might be beneficial to some, others would rather write the check when repairs are needed.

I used to not think they were worth it. A Honda Odyssey convinced me otherwise. Both power doors, power steering issues, etc, etc.

Buy a FACTORY extended warranty from one of the dealers who sell them online in huge volume at a deep discount. I know you can do it for the US makes and Honda, maybe Toyota and Mazda too. You can't for VW Group, fixed price, and it ain't cheap.

If you read any consumer reports or finance articles, etc. on the matter, it will tell you DONT buy. We have purchased them on our previous four vehicles and they more than paid for themselves. Given you mention you will keep the car quite a while, I would encourage you to purchase.

slight pivot on the topic, because this is about vehicles, but I've recently started taking the extended warranty on major appliances after having 2 fail with irreparable issues recently. but we're talking about a few hundred $ rather than thousand or so
