Are extended warranties a scam, necessary, worthwhile?
With all the tech in electronics it's a different approach today.
Comes with 3 year but we intend to keep for a long time.

They are absolutely worth the money!
As a tip, wait until about 30k miles before you purchase the warranty. It should still be the same cost as if purchased with the vehicle except you will not lose 3yr/36k of it running concurrent with the factory warranty.
I deal with them daily and have seen them cover some pretty spendy repairs. Hell, a particular 2016 Tahoe has had the extended cover over 13k in repairs in the last year alone. He pair 2600 for the warranty. It has a lifetime power train and has covered both the transmission and the lifters.
And you are correct on the electronics. They will all fail at some point.

I would say it depends on the car brand/model.
Obviously if it’s very reliable it’s probably not worth it.

I purchased an extended warranty on my 2020 f 150. The truck was having the 10 speed transmission issues.
After a couple of visits to the dealer, it was determined that I needed a new transmission. It was replaced with a brand new unit and at the time it was in the shop, a fuel filler issue was identified and fixed as well.
The total cost for this work was $10,700 and my cost was $0
The policy was a Louisiana Auto Dealers association product. Would buy again.

With modern tech and electronics and high cost of labor...cars repairs are expensive. Repairs a door or lift gate actuator 750 or more, seat motor 500 , alternator or starter...
I purchased on all my vehicles and the only one I never used 2015 pro4x xterra.
I only purchase mfg..after market products are sketchy. Endurance is being sued in multiple states

Vehicles today make the extended warranty a good investment.

In my recent experience the new car extended warranties from the dealer are highly negotiable in price. I was offered a warranty for more than $3,500, and they sold it for $800, less than the cost of replacing the screen in the dash. That was the first extended warranty I ever bought.

Yeah, they’re good. Don’t buy anything with the name shield in it though and do your research for best pricing. Some dealers will want to charge you $10K locally but you can get it from another dealer somewhere else in the country for $3500.

LDS is absolutely the standard, Gulf States Financial Services not far behind. I'd try to stay away from NAC, if possible...

Be sure to ask the right quetions.\What is covered; fine print. At some point they will try to "update" the terms and exclude some things.
It's best to buy one from the manufacturer.

I'm fairly decent friends with someone and we got to talking about cars and he told me he had an extended warranty with the company Ice-T does commercials for and I was flabbergasted. There may be some legit aftermarket warranties, but I'm sure as hell not using one endorsed by a third rate rapper.

I personally think a lot of them are scams. Like Car Shield and Endurance. The ones you can buy from dealers I think just aren’t worth the price you pay. Statistically speaking from what I’ve read they aren’t worth it. The dealers wouldn’t try to sell them to you so hard unless they are making money off them. They’re not in the business to lose money.

Of course they are trying to make a dollar. It is a business.
Same as every Shell station asking if you'd like a Snickers every time you check out.
Doesn't mean they are shady or anything. It means they like to make a good living and are offing something useful that someone may have otherwise not thought of.

If a ford, use floodfordesp.com. Factory ford warranty for slightly above cost. Recognized at any dealership. You get your pick of mileage, years, and deductible.
Not sure for other brands.

my company has alot of company vehicles which we used to never purchase extended warranties on.
it took one truck to show us they are worth what they cost.
these days because of all the electronics alone they will pay for themselves on one repair.
also with all the issues new vehicles are having its nice to have that peace of mind.

Momentary lapse of reasoning on my part, thanks for correcting me...

Just bought a new vehicle this week. Got to the warranty conversation, and it went something like this….
Finance Mgr is selling it (that by itself is flag! Finance selling…)
- This $2500 covers…sidewall tires, tires, yada yada that traditional warranty does not…
- This $1800 service pkg goes to X time, Y miles (paying services at discount all up front, if services even needed). (Fear factor: this overpriced service should scare you)
- This $2200 windshield (fear factor: many sensors are now in windshield…$2k to replace)….
Me: no thank you.
Why?
- Have an emergency fund earning 4.17% interest, can be used on any risked item they are selling (vs only item they are selling)
- Sits in my account until / unless needed (if ever needed at all) whereas a warranty is $ out the door that day.
- self insured on these things have paid us back handsomely over the years.
I recommend emergency funds > extended warranty. Not just for cars but roofs, appliances, etc.
We, too, keep vehicles for a long time (til they die).
Our emergency fund has earned 10s of thousands of $ incremental over 30yrs (blessed that our bets on new item purchases (home, cars) rarely bit us in arse.

Profit margin % on warranties > profit margin % on most vehicles. Like any insurance, you are betting that snakes bites you, and they are betting it will not bite you. They price package services all up front locking in profit when you sign for warranty. Theirs is guaranteed. Yours is hope.
Not necessarily evil. Just smartly on the guaranteed side of the transaction. You are not.
Unless you have, say, an emergency fund where you are countering with earned income and flexibility options from that fund that a warranty cannot provide.

Depends on vehicles…
Toyota/Honda/Lexus not needed
Mercedes/Audi/BMW would be wise
