This sounds like some freak event.

I recall a high school football player in Brandon, MS (maybe) that died unexpectedly and under similar circumstances. Overheating, felt terribly dehydrated, seemingly couldn’t drink enough to slake his thirst-and ended up going to hospital and dying.

64 ounces that she drank in a span of 20 minutes.

I have done that plenty of times, especially when dehydrated outside in the heat. Something's off here.

Does not compute. 4 bottles in 20 minutes? I've done that before.

I just read a story about something similar (from an Astros writer or something) and it could be related to not having enough sodium in her system.

Water toxicity is basically water diluting the sodium in the blood, so if she already had low sodium then this could have been the issue.

You’re only supposed to drink half a gallon of water per day?

I drink over a gallon of water a day in the dead of winter.

“I mean, an average water bottle is like 16 ounces, so that was 64 ounces that she drank in a span of 20 minutes. That’s half a gallon. That’s what you’re supposed to drink in a whole day.”

I do this all the time

An Ole Miss frat pledge years ago died from drinking something like five gallons of water while being hazed.

If she was dehydrated than she had low sodium already.

Feel bad for the family, but I drink a shitload of water per day and there has to be another contributing factor. Healthiness is having clear piss. To do that, you drink a lot of water.

There’s no way 4 bottles of water was too much water no matter how fast you drink it.

I’ve easily drank a gallon in 30 min when working in this heat on the farm

I drank half a case of water bottles today alone

I heard about water toxicity in the Army but always figured it was an old Army tale to tell new recruits

She must have been sweating a lot to lose sodium at the same time she was drinking a lot of water. I take a ton of magnesium, potassium and sodium supplements to play in the summer on top of guzzling water. You have to replace electrolytes, not just hydrate with water.

Something seems off there. A half gallon in 20 minutes shouldn’t cause water toxicity.

There is more to it than that. The thirst/dehydrated feeling was a symptom.

ETA: And I think the article stating 4 bottles in 20 minutes may be a bit misleading. I think the family could have been focusing on that one drinking episode. I bet she drank even more than that. They may not have seen it.

Weird, though, and surely there will be an autopsy, right?

Maybe we should look at why she was trying to pound water because she was clearly unwell.

I'm going to guess that might solve the problem.

After every one of my football games on Friday nights I eat a bag of regular Lays, and drink two bottles of Electrolit electrolyte drink.

She was on the lake from Sat-Tuesday per another article and weather in that area for then was in the low to mid 90's. Maybe she was drinking alcohol and not rehydrating properly.
