An Indiana mother of two who told her family it felt like she couldn’t drink enough water to feel satiated collapsed and died from water toxicity — a rare consequence of drinking too much water too quickly.

Ashley Summers, 35, was out at Lake Freeman with her husband and two young daughters over the Fourth of July weekend when she began feeling severely dehydrated.

“Someone said she drank four bottles of water in 20 minutes,” her brother Devon Miller told WRTV. “I mean, an average water bottle is like 16 ounces, so that was 64 ounces that she drank in a span of 20 minutes. That’s half a gallon. That’s what you’re supposed to drink in a whole day.”

On the last day of the family’s trip, the mom began feeling like she couldn’t drink enough water.

Summers complained about feeling lightheaded and having a stubborn headache, her family said.

My sister, Holly, called me, and she was just an absolute wreck. She was like ‘Ashley is in the hospital. She has brain swelling, they don’t know what’s causing it, they don’t know what they can do to get it to go down, and it’s not looking good,'” said Miller.

She never regained consciousness, and doctors told her family she had died from water toxicity."

There’s no way 4 bottles of water was too much water no matter how fast you drink it.

You’re only supposed to drink half a gallon of water per day?

I drink about a gallon to a gallon and a half a day. Never had any issues.

Granted, this is throughout 12 hours or so.

They’re (water) killing us

I’ve chugged this much on the regular. Something else is up or she’s tiny.

I mean I think I've seen guys drink 4 beers in 20 minutes at tailgates. I feel like 4 bottles in 20 minutes isn't something that crazy especially if she was feeling dehydrated.

64 ounces is a half a gallon, in 20 minutes. Curious what else was in her system.

Last month I struggled to consume 1/2 gallon of colonoscopy prep solution in an hour. But it was the doctors orders, also has do drink 36 ounces of water that morning before noon.

Something seems off with the numbers. I know for a fact I had 3 16oz waters within 30 minutes easily today. No way should 4 within 20 minutes kill someone.

She has to have had some other underlying condition if the 4 bottles of water story is accurate. That’s not enough to kill you like this. Unless she had already depleted all her electrolytes and the dilution of the remaining electrolytes from 4 bottles was enough to screw with her heart.

Yea I'm a big ole tub of shite. But I drink 64oz of water every morning within an hour of getting out of bed.

This sounds like some freak event.

I just read a story about something similar (from an Astros writer or something) and it could be related to not having enough sodium in her system.

If she had thrown up, or not eaten enough, or was otherwise on a low sodium diet, even those 4 bottles of water could have been enough to dilute what little sodium she had in her.

I'm not saying that's what it was, but it could be related to that.
