The air assault on the Hostomel airport north of Kyiv was a small force, the column of combined arms coming from the south was not small. Both were expeditionary forces by definition.

The Battle of Hostomel lasted until April 1, 2022 when the russians withdrew.

Russia doesn't give two shits about the land itself, or at least not the entirety of it. Ukraine can be its own country, they just want it to be pro Russia. A worse but similar deal to what they have now, with a different master.

Why did Russia initially invade in 2014 AFTER Ukraine signed deals with Chevron, Exxon and Shell to explore and produce it's extensive tight shale formations in Donbas, offshore including Crimea and west of the Dnipro?

If they don't care about the land then they don't care about cheaper to transport natural gas and oil taking Russian market share.

They in fact care about Ukraine plenty and it leaving the USSR is what made the USSR finally collapse. They care about the shipbuilding which is more than what they have.
Russia cares about the wheat and sunflower production which they cannot match as well.

The bigger problem is that if Ukraine joins the EU they will have a higher standard of living than Russia. That's happened for every European country that left the Soviet Union. That will make it obvious how much the Russian public is being ripped off by the kleptocracy. Oligarchs can't allow that.

Can Russia kill Zelensky already to end this charade!!!

Russia has tried to kill Zelensky over a a dozen times and has failed. Apparently the only thing Russia can do successfully is send hundreds of men charging a machine gun position.

The drones are so lame. It's like a glitch in a video game or something.

This is all to secure incursion into Russia from that direction, ie for the land. Ukraine obviously won’t cooperate to be Belarus 2.0 therefore Putin invaded, to secure the land and what goes on on it.

Do you honestly think Russia wants the headache of decades of local resistance in central and eastern Ukraine, with no real strategic benefit? All that does is put NATO right on their doorstep.

Nothing new for them.

quote:

I think Russia enjoys Ukraine being a buffer just as much as NATO does, they just want that buffer to be pro-Kremlin instead of pro-Washington. They don't need the land for any other reason than some Alexander the Great cosplay fantasy people project onto Putin, which is IMO a misread of who he is. He is a murderous thug who wants to bang gymnasts on his yacht, I don't think he is a murderous thug who wants to conquer the world, or even re-unite the old Soviet Union whether he says that publicly or not.

He’s likened his own self to Peter the Great. He wants to restore the Russian empire, not the Soviet Union.

Darn right they are. You can't keep firing million dollar missles to shoot down a $5 or $10k drone.
A lot of R&D dollars about to be spent.

It’s cheaper than replacing dead servicemembers.

It appears that drones are doing some damage to the Air Force of mighty Russia right about now.

Why won't Ukraine and its lame drones leave the good Christian Vlad and his planes alone?

So were iron, gunpowder, and flying machines.

but since Ukraine had seen the buildup on the border for months they were ready for that move and pretty much slaughtered those guys.

Kiev said they had, but when CNN showed up the VDV were in control of the airport.

Russia lost the Battle of Hostomel and the entire Northern Ukraine campaign. The sooner you accept reality then the sooner you can heal comrade.

ISW Update

quote:

Key Takeaways:

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitri Peskov claimed that NATO and Russia are in “direct confrontation,” likely as part of ongoing Kremlin efforts to intensify existing information operations meant to force the West into self-deterrence.

Russian Chief of the General Staff Army General Valery Gerasimov appealed to Commonwealth of Independent State (CIS) members to increase cooperation against perceived Western threats as part of the effort to posture against the West.

The Kremlin leveraged this overall information operation about escalation with NATO to target France specifically, following French President Emmanuel Macron’s recent calls for the West to expand the level and types of security assistance it sends to Ukraine.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov also promoted information operations feigning interest in negotiations, and Lavrov’s and Shoigu’s likely coordinated informational efforts may signal a new round of intensified Russian rhetoric about negotiations.

Russian President Vladimir Putin continues attempts to balance the Kremlin’s opposing efforts to set social expectations for a protracted Russian war effort and to assuage Russian society’s concerns about the economic consequences of the war and labor migration.

Russian forces conducted a roughly reinforced company-sized mechanized assault towards Chasiv Yar (west of Bakhmut) on April 4 and advanced up to the eastern outskirts of the settlement.

Russian forces also recently made confirmed advances near Bakhmut and Donetsk City.

An unspecified senior NATO official reportedly told Russian opposition news outlet Vazhnye Istorii that NATO intelligence agencies have not observed indications that Russia is preparing for a large-scale partial mobilization wave.

Vladimir Solovyov said that Kyiv should not be left standing, using the Crocus City Hall attack as a pretext for more bombing. It was clear from the start that Moscow wouldn't waste this opportunity to falsely pin the blame for an ISIS attack on Ukraine.

The split in NATO leadership has become apparent now. The US – Euro positions of the last 80 years have flipped. The European members, led by Macron of all people, are now the aggressors pushing to increase weaponry that can be used against targets inside Russia.

Meanwhile, the escalation managers of the White House and the pro-Russian Trump GOP have taken the opposite position. The purposeful lack of initiative shown by the US is destroying decades of work in building leadership and influence in Europe.

The European members of NATO are breaking away from the US stagnation. They are moving to increase the quantity and range of weapons supplied to Ukraine and yesterday started floating the trial balloons over stationing NATO member troops in Ukraine itself. It's coming, don't kid yourself, and the US can't stop it.

Unless we get rid of failures like Trump and Sullivan, the American Century is heading for an ignominious close.
