re: JDPower: Consumers don’t like newer cars as much; thinks they are getting worse

A headline I saw yesterday was about Ford hiring a former Apple exec to bolster their software services so they can get more subscription income.
LINK
So on top of paying for the car, car manufacturers think we're going to pay thousands of dollars a year for software? That was a crazy proposition before the recent inflation, now it almost seems like they aren't aiming at the average consumer anymore.

Ford Integrated Services will be responsible for further developing technology like Ford’s BlueCruise “hands-free” highway driver assistance system, which is currently priced at $2,100. The new unit will also focus on commercial solutions for fleet management, telematics and EV charging. Ford says it already has 550,000 paid software and services subscribers, with 80% of those customers coming from Ford Pro.

The govt pushing ridiculous fuel economy standards is ruining vehicles
1. Having to create over the top aerodynamic designs leads to ugliness
2. Using cheaper lighter materials to reduce weight leads to unreliability
3. Also putting systems in place that shut the engine off at red lights, or like the MDS system on Rams which turn 4 cylinders off while cruising. Motherfricker, I paid for 8 cylinders and I want to use all 8 cylinders at all times.

harder than ever to do aftermarket modifications

Car manufacturers need to back off the touch screens
Having to click through menus to adjust the AC or volume is absurd
Bring back the buttons!
When I bought a "new" truck last year I specifically went looking for a 2015 since that was the last year I could find without a screen. Found one at super low mileage and that was close enough to new for me.

The biggest area of dissatisfaction has been in the looks department.
Need to start by getting rid of all the black plastic above the fender wells. Horrible!!!

Cost cutting, substituting plastic, thin-wall parts, etc. are the name of the game to try an achieve federally imposed mileage numbers. Electrical components are subject to a lot of failure more recently than in the past. Have had to replace a lot of sensors for recent models off warranty. Not major problems but idiot light warning and/or non-functioning components are the end result.

I hate all the safety nannies: blind spot warning, lane departure, accident avoidance, etc.

I would be curious to know how many people would rather a cheaper vehicle without all the current technology features vs how many people would prefer to not have a cheaper vehicle in order to have all the current features.
I would gladly buy one with the following being the only electronics
power windows\locks
AC
airbags
gauges for voltage, water temp, gas, and oil pressure
and that is about it. I dont need 33 cameras and a heated steering wheel, or a 24" touch screen dashboard.

You have to click through menus to adjust the AC while driving, but God forbid you try and change the time on the clock while sitting at a red light because your vehicle isn't in park.
You people really adjust AC that often? Automatic AC is such a set it and forget it thing that’s been around for decades now.
Set it to 68 and leave it in auto. Never touch it again.

I would like a circa 2000 interior. No screens. All knobs. No sensors.
My new 2023 is just constantly nagging me with sensors and warnings. Everytime I go to parallel park my car just attacks me with negativity - just beeping at me from all directions that I’m about to hit something and I can’t fit there! Damn you, Odyssey. How can I perform when you are undercutting my confidence at every turn.

I bet you’ll find a correlation in the decrease in satisfaction with the increase in price.
When the full sized pickup that used to cost 25k os now 55k, the question everyone asks themselves is what the frick am i paying for?
Does it haul twice as much? No
Does it have twice the range? No
Does is give me blowies? No, unfortunately.
100% agree....same with the 100k suburbans for the family.
Same room, same fuel economy, triple the price.

Seems like so much is geared towards idiot-proofing new vehicles with automatic parking-assist and lane detection and adaptive cruise speeds intercoms and CVTs and red light engine shutoffs...
They are crafting the car to the lowest common denominator. I understand that's necessary for some mouth breathers. It should totally be an option if you want to pay for all that.
But some folks just want a solid vehicle where you might have to pay attention a tad more, be a little more careful, adjust the mirrors and push a knob to adjust the air if it saves 30% off the sticker price.

Man you are spot on, I have almost wrecked my wife's XC90 trying to change the fricking temperature on more than one occasion.
Surprisingly my GMC pickup has the touch screen but kept knobs and all that, much easier to navigate.

LOL at this being down voted. It’s 100% true.
reminds me of the post here where a few guys just couldn't come to terms with cars being much more reliable than they used to be. The nostalgia for a 187hp 454 and powerglide is real.

My fishing partner has a brand new Dodge. When backing the boat down the ramp in the morning, it's courteous to turn the headlights off so you don't blind the other guys backing down. Well, I can't get the %&$# lights to turn off. I ask him about it and he has to Google it then spend 30 mins scrolling through the control screen trying to figure it out.
Fyi, I believe you can turn them off by engaging the parking brake. You may still have to turn the knob to the off position after engaging the parking brake. Also, those are actually the DRLs running not the headlights. I believe RAM uses their headlights for DRLs. That's why it's confusing.

I love a touchscreen for the infotainment display/navigation.
quote:Agreed, and curious on what cars have those issues.
I likely would not buy a car with touchscreen climate controls. Traditional knobs & buttons only for me.
I have a car with maybe the biggest screen, but everything I need is on the main page, including AC and music controls, etc that was mentioned. I can't think of anything I need on a normal basis while driving that is hidden in a menu.

Give me a backup camera and a screen for the radio/bluetooth and I'm good.

Brief list of just a few modern car things that suck.
Touch Screens for everything
Subscription based features
GM Active Fuel Management (lifters kill camshaft)
GM 8 speed tranny
Ford/GM 10 Speed tranny
Ford insta pop the spark plug heads
Plastic intake manifolds
Plastic Thermostat housings
New Thin Plastic radiator (side) tanks
Crazy thin paint
0w-anything oil
Dipstick...what dipstick
x metal because it's lighter than steel
"in the shop again? - it's a $70,000 truck"
How can you spend this much money on Entertainment R&D, and have an audio interface this bad?
"you can't grease it...its lifetime"
In the summer, only charge it in the early morning.
