A valedictorian has earned the right to pick the topic.

These speeches should be introspective, positive, uplifting, encouraging. It’s a sendoff to your class, not an opportunity for a political rant.

So it would okay if someone were to spout racist, homophobic, misogynistic shite in their speech?

Proof that being valedictorian has limited application in the real world.

Just pat her on the head.

She’ll use her daily well honed attention span and self righteousness to become a community organizer for the mid terms.

Sounds like her parents must be the illegal variety. Those that immigrated legally don’t like all the line skippers.

Yep .

They’ve earned that right ……. I might think theyre full of dog shite, but id sit there and listen.. hell, i might even learn something about how some kid could be “indoctrinated” with hateful, narrow-minded thoughts like that .

My parents raised me different. I was valedictorian and spoke at graduation. Just because I had the RIGHT to do something didn’t mean I SHOULD do something.

I represented my school, family, and community and did so in a classy, positive and motivating way. Graduating is about celebrating great teachers that impacted your life and reflecting on the great friendships you made, not lecturing others to share your views.

Wait, I thought words were "literal violence", if the people hearing them don't like them

Countless conservative speakers have gotten harassed, jeered, booed off stage, and even murdered for espousing their opinions on things at universities across the US..

We need to normalize allowing the kids in the audience stand up and turn their back to this kind of nonsense.

The valedictory address is the farewell statement delivered at a graduation ceremony. The speeches are generally inspirational and persuasive. The aim of the address is to inspire the graduates and to thank individuals responsible for their successes while reflecting on the accomplishments of the class. The valedictory address allows a representative of the graduating class to bid a final farewell to the students and to the school, as the graduates begin the next phase of their lives.

I was looking for someone to post this. Valedictorian origin is from the Latin vale dicere, which means "to say farewell". Salutatorian comes from the Latin salutare, which means "to greet". That is why the Salutatorian address typically comes before the Valedictorian address in a graduation ceremony.

The Valedictorian was originally the top Latin student, who would address the graduating class with funny quotes and jokes in Latin (originated at William & Mary in the late 1700s). High Schools started awarding the honor sometime in the 1920s, and it evolved from top Latin student to the highest GPA.

People that think this way aren’t smart enough to be valedictorian so it’s a non-issue

It’s like asking if dwarves should be allowed to climb larger NBA players to get rebounds.

That being said, I think having a lukewarm political take that is personal to you that you want to fire off as an 18 year old with an earned platform is different than legitimate hate speech.

A high academic honor doesn't always equate to wisdom.

Of course

It does equate to a few minutes at graduation to give a speech of your choosing, however.

My nephews in Portland opened up acknowledging they were celebrating their achievements on land stolen from the indigenous tribes, then proceeded to rattle off like a dozen tribes that conquered one another to steal the land from the previous tribe. Circa 2023.

Pure entitlement.
