I’m 31 but I look 19 so I always get “so do you go to lsu?” To which I laugh and reply “about 10 years ago” . It’s annoying but I get it

Some of you people are so flipping weird. It’s just conversation intended to bring up more conversation or a talking point.

Example….

So, what kind of work do you do?

I’m an operator at DuPont.

Oh, small world. I sell widgets to DuPont.

Now we have something to talk about and will probably find a common interest or maybe people we both know. Who knows? It’s why people converse.

Why does everything have to be so freaking strange and awkward with some of you? It’s no great wonder so many of you struggle so mightily in conversational skills.

Winner. Nailed it.

I hate it too but I find myself asking anyway.

It’s more of a second level icebreaker though, I only ask if I already think we are both enjoying the conversation

I rarely ask, but I don’t mind at all answering. I do think it’s a great question to ask though. I can tell a lot about a person how they answer.

I hate it when non-hunters, at a Christmas gathering, ask
How many deer did you get ?

Like, it is built in instinct to go for numbers.

I'd be happy to hear grandma ask, " How many deer could you have killed so far, but chose to let pass ? "

I get that it's an ice breaker.

That said, the older I get the less impressed I am with others.

Unless you're an astronaut or a rock star, I'm not really interested in what you do for a living.

I don't ask it a ton but it is interesting to hear about different types of work and all the different ways people make a living.

For many men, their job/career is a huge part of their life and can tell you a lot about what kind of person they are.

I love it. But it's because I'm a pilot and I was going to tell them that in short order anyway.

Their answer is usually of little relevance and I'll just probably forget shortly, along with their name. I can't remember a name for shite.

Agreed. I love being surprised that a company that does XYZ exists because I never thought about it before.

I'm surprised so many people think this is about ego

Even if you're a cynic and don't think it's a good faith way to connect with people, the real answer is that I'm trying to find out if you can bring me business. If your answer is pilot or plumber or shop owner, I'm going to be interested because you're not the same finance, lawyer, commercial real estate guy like every other neighbor.

A now deceased friend with many prizes for his research in psychology (lab rat stuff) would tell people he was a plumber at cocktail parties in Uptown NOLA. They would STFU and leave him alone. If he had said psychologist, they would have poured out their and/or ills of their friends onto him.

Sounds like you’re self-conscious. I cover high school sports and clean up dog shite for a living. And I’m not embarrassed

It’s an easy thoughtless conversation question. Equivalent to saying something about the weather. It’s what humans do.
