The gulf is scorching this summer, like the land around it.
Was (and am) expecting models to underestimate Idalia. Maybe shear can take a little off her on this trek north.

The thing I am not liking (living in the suburbs of Tampa) is that it seems to be moving NNE instead of due north/NNW this morning. Might just be a wobble, but if it's already on the east side of the cone/models, it would not be good for us. The difference in 20/30 miles this early could mean the difference between a glancing blow and significant impacts. Will definitely be keeping an eye out.

This fricker needs to stay away from the forgotten coast. Just got back from battening down the hatches at our house on the Cape, thought we were in the clear as it started to shift east. Now it looks like it's shifting back north.

Years ago I was in myrtle Beach and a tropical storm came through that had come up through the Florida gulf side. It was surprisingly rougher than expected for something that had already crossed a lot of land.
Yeah, it seems no matter the size of the storm over the last few years, the coast around Myrtle has been hit hard with surge. I think most of it has been bad timing of high tides during storm impacts.

Seems like the pressure is dropping pretty fast now?
Just wait till tonight.
Its still fighting some dry air to the NW and some shear. The progress this morning though, should allow Idalia to take advantage of the hot water and benign upper levels over the next 24 hours or so.

I was expecting this. Just hoping it would be a little slower.

Charleston floods anyways.
On the west edge of the peninsula the roads are almost impossible after a big thunderstorm or king tide. Not sure I wanna see what a deluge, winds, and high tide all bring.

Not saying Idalia will do this, but I’ll never forget going to bed and waking up the next day to see a 145 mph storm.. I hope that doesn’t happen yet again tomorrow

Unfortunately for Florida, the hurricane is passing over some deep waters which are among the hottest in the world-- along long 85W and between the 25th and 28th parallel. In the past 20+ years, every hurricane that develops in August and September that passes over those waters is a monster when it comes ashore.

It's passing over the dreaded deep eddy in the east-central Gulf. Pray for Florida.

Models pretty tightly clustered on Steinhatchee right now. Another piece of Old Florida lost.

I bet if this thing was headed to Houston the thread would be stickied by now

Not raising the winds to major at the 10 pm the night before Ida was one the biggest mistakes I can remember from the NHC.
Yes, science nerds, we didnt have an obs but all us cloud nerds do know what a hurricane starting to cook looks like.
Ida was obviously bombing out for the 10 pm news and the update made it seem like it was holding steady and not strengthening like it was/expected.

The Cajun navy will be making its way to Tallahassee a little later today
