What I believe is this move continues the process for Twitter to legitimize itself as an information source. Take one step away from online message boards (like Reddit and Tigerdroppings) and one step closer to news outlets (newspapers, TV, radio, etc) to manage both fake accounts and verified accounts. That's the issue.
If Twitter wants to continue to promote verified accounts it would be beneficial for them to fact-check claims by verified users. If the Twitter corporation doesn't want to be seen as a platform of disinformation, as it constantly does on in other media outlets, then fact-checking will help put the claim on the user and not on the company.

That's not harassment. Have his post been directed at the spouse? Are they even on Twitter?
If it is harassment, Twitter has been doing an awful job of controlling harassment on their platform for years. Pick any popular post and you'll see it. It's a cesspool of vile comments and personal attacks.

I'm not an expert in this area, but I'm sure Twitter has some protection from liability for the views expressed by users.
That doesn't mean they can't enact their own regulations to limit speech they do not want to host. Just being protected in a broader sense doesn't limit them from having their own, narrower regulations as a private company.
If this wasn't the case, the government would be mandating Twitter allow certain types of speech. That's constitutionally riskier than anything Twitter has been doing.

The funniest thing is this whole thread started over Twitter fact checking a Trump tweet, and Trump then Tweeting about freedom of speech being violated.
The president of the United States complaining about his freedom of speech being violated. Let that sink in. He has a press room in the White House and can call a press conference anytime he wants to and press members will show up to broadcast his words. But this really isn't about freedom of speech. It's about him using his Twitter feed to spread his BS and grievances.
We're living in the stupidest timeline I can imagine.

As usual you completely disregard my point and argue a completely separate one. Of course there are vocal Conservatives on Twitter. You can often find them between their periodic bannings and forced disappearances. Nobody says they don't exist. But there is no COMMENSURATE Conservative Twitter Mob that fanatically enforces the orthodoxy via shaming and punishment. It's more than a Progressive Playground, it's a mechanism for organized punishment of all those who dissent from Progressive Orthodoxy.

Exactly. CNN might as well be mad magazine. I only trust the baws on Fox news. They keep the lame stream media in check the best they can.

No, Twitter is a private company.
I do believe it is a stupid business decision, though. Of course, how does Twitter make any money? Ads I guess? So I guess as long as their advertisers don't care, they can do it.
