The overall damage cost from this storm will be astronomical due to it maintaining strength inland, widespread surge and huge wind field, combined with dumping a ton of rain on an already saturated and flooded area in the Appalachians.
About the only positive is landfall will be in a lowly populated area

Tennessee has been in a drought, including the area near Nashville. They haven't yet gotten the inches of rain that we have east of Knoxville. If it stalls where it's shown to be going to stall, the Ft. Campbell Army base will be affected and also there to help.
For the east side of the mountains, Asheville NC TV should have coverage.
For the west side [link=(www.wbir.com)]LINK[/link] wbir seems to have good coverage.
Through yesterday evening we had 2.5 inches of rain in two days so our drought was broken, and it hasn't stopped raining since the. NWS changed us from Flood watch to Flood warning this morning. and the swath of affected counties includes a lot of the National Park.
TEMA (Tn's version of FEMA) has always warned of the potential disaster draining to Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge.
What has happened repeatedly are rock slides that take out US interstate 40 through the mountains on the NC side of the state line-where there are no detours.
Thanks for the info. I'm all too familiar with the road issues in the Gatlinburg area. It's going to be interesting to see how bad it gets.
I have a buddy headed to Chattanooga this weekend, so far they're thinking they'll be ok, just lots of rain. It's so close to Atlanta though, I think the weather will be similar.

I'm not condoning their choice but they may luck out by the grace of their stupidity if it keeps drifting east.
I don't understand taking that risk. I think they're just not educated on hurricanes and listening to people who have ridden them out, but probably not where there is surge. The story really bothered me because the woman was constantly begging them to leave and sending them links to read.

Didn't they have bad flooding earlier this year I think? I remember seeing some videos on it.
Our front and back yards are already flooded here in SC. Raining all morning. Wife has a friend in Clearwater. Hopefully this eastern shift doesn't put her in danger.
Prayers to everyone.

For those that stay in those situations, they will tell them to get a permanent marker and write their SS# on their arm/leg so it will help them identify the body.
That's what multiple commenters told her to tell them.

Also worth noting to have more than one alert system at your disposal.
It doesn’t happen often but when we’ve had tornados here there can be delays in alerts or one might be down/have an issue.
We’ve also had it where the rain and the tornado itself was close enough/loud enough that you couldn’t hear the sirens.

Per WAFB
Long range models are suggesting we could see another tropical wave move into the Gulf by the end of next week. This is too far out for the National Hurricane Center to start highlighting in their tropical development outlook. Things are already busy enough in the tropics with Hurricane Helene expected to make landfall in Floriday later today and Tropical Storm Isaac in the northern Atlantic. We also have a well-defined area of low pressure that could become Joyce in the next few days. If something tries to materialize in the Gulf late next week, we can expect rain chances to go on the rise. Where and how strong the system will get remains highly uncertain.

Sure, other than Tropical Storm force winds are predicted to get here Thursday at 8:00 PM.
So you are telling me ATL is going to have Tropical Storm winds starting in 6.5 hours from now?

They did. Lots of the roads were closed earlier this year due to flooding. Going from Pigeon Forge to Gatlinburg was an interesting drive.

The woman posted today that she has to accept the fact that her children may not have great grandparents by tomorrow afternoon.
Thats sort of how I got my parents to leave Bay St Louis before Katrina. They were going to stay and I stopped by on my way out. I told them I probably wouldnt see them again as I left. 30 minutes later they were in the car. All that was left after the storm was a slab and a pool.

Sometimes it's about me, okay? Not all the time but every once in a while it's my time. Like today. Now if you're not okay with that then feel free to go. But if you stay, you have to do your job. And that means smiling and talking about my bridal beauty and most importantly not making it about you.

As #Helene continues to approach the coast, please do not get overly focused on short-term wobbles in its track, "false" eye locations, or on specific computer model simulations.
EVERYONE along the Florida Big Bend coast is at risk of potentially catastrophic storm surge and damaging hurricane-force winds later this evening, and life-threatening storm surge is already increasing along the west coast of Florida.

For some ragged hurricane eyes, the actual center position may not be where it seems on satellite imagery. This is why we also rely on the Hurricane Hunters and radar data.
