They announced a mandatory evacuation for zone A in the Tampa Bay area. The airport and anything to the SW of that is in that zone. It's straight up storm surge concerns.

Damn man, Port St. Joe and Cape San Blas is going to get fricking wrecked again. Hurricane Michael was not all that long ago and that storm was a beast.

12z Hurricane models seem to really like that Helene has closed off an inner core and avoided landfall on the NE Yucatan

This was already assumed. Nothing new here.

It wasn't. The Yucatan was a big player here. The hope was that there would be more land interaction to slow development and strengthening. There wasn't, unfortunately.

I know there was hope but most of the tracks did not have it making any landfall there.

Damn they upped the surge for east of the center to 12 to 18 feet.

quote:

STORM SURGE: The combination of a life-threatening storm surge and
the tide will cause normally dry areas near the coast to be flooded
by rising waters moving inland from the shoreline. The water could
reach the following heights above ground somewhere in the indicated
areas if the peak surge occurs at the time of high tide...

Carrabelle, FL to Chassahowitzka, FL...12-18 ft
Apalachicola, FL to Carrabelle, FL...8-12 ft
Chassahowitzka, FL to Anclote River, FL...8-12 ft
Indian Pass, FL to Apalachicola, FL...6-9 ft
Anclote River, FL to Middle of Longboat Key, FL...5-8 ft
Tampa Bay...5-8 ft
Middle of Longboat Key, FL to Englewood, FL...4-7 ft
Englewood, FL to Flamingo, FL...3-5 ft
Charlotte Harbor...3-5 ft

FWIW from a government evacuation standpoint for Hurricanes its almost always about surge. Surge kills a lot more people than wind does.

I think we're going to see some of the most widespread evacuation orders that we've seen in a long time with this one. The big problem is that there just isn't much time.

What do you think causes the surge?

Macon, we have a problem.

You put a 944 through all those pines from the FL/GA line north through central GA and a lot more than Macon is about to have power problems.

I mean you aren't wrong, lol. But they don't look at wind speeds specifically they look at surge heights. There's definitely some places that could have mild winds but high surge, and vice versa.

Its also about timing, surge can happen first as the storm winds are blowing the water in.

Most importantly, I was stating that I've personally talked to multiple county officials of different counties and everyone uses surge height predictions to issue evacuations. Take that however you want.
