LA Times
Which way do you think LA Times leans?
quote:
After the FBI seized Joseph Ruiz’s life savings during a raid on a safe deposit box business in Beverly Hills, the unemployed chef went to court to retrieve his $57,000. A judge ordered the government to tell Ruiz why it was trying to confiscate the money.
It came from drug trafficking, an FBI agent responded in court papers.
Ruiz’s income was too low for him to have that much money, and his side business selling bongs made from liquor bottles suggested he was an unlicensed pot dealer, the agent wrote. The FBI also said a dog had smelled unspecified drugs on Ruiz’s cash.
The FBI was wrong. When Ruiz produced records showing the source of his money was legitimate, the government dropped its false accusation and returned his money.

I can't say I've ever heard of a private safe deposit box company that isn't a bank. If you follow the link to the actual article in the LA Times, there's a picture of the place. It looks like a pawn shop that offers cash for gold, anonymous safe deposit box rentals, and check cashing. The company has been charged with money laundering.
Of course, none of this justifies what the FBI did and it's clearly a 4th amendment issue. Ridiculous that folks have to go to court to maybe get some of their most valuable assets back from the government.
On the other hand, you've got to be kind of be an idiot to store valuables in what's essentially a pawn shop.

These feds are saying, that money and jewelry and coins smell like weed.
In a state where weed is legal and pervasive
And that’s why they had to steal all these things
don't forget they were all locked away in safe deposit boxes. So if they didn't find weed in those boxes how the frick did they smell like it?

Same way they detect a “heavy odor of marijuana” even when you’ve never smoked in your vehicle.

I thought you liberals hated to victim blame?
Private vault companies exist and are actually routinely used by wealthy people.

I used to think that the regular field agents were decent people and it was just their bosses that were corrupt assholes, but it's clear that that agency is rotten from the director all the way down to the secretaries.

I was young when the ATF and FBI assassinated the wife of a man they entrapped and also fried women and children on live TV. These people have always been corrupt, incompetent, and unaccountable.
