How about they find another city willing to host the festival?

I’ll wait until they find a taker.

One of the things I am proudest of in my consulting career is authoring the language that kept Essence and Jazz fests from being eligible for the film tax credits.

Yea. They’re just admitting the market doesn’t support what they’re trying to put out, assuming it’s run above board (no clue personally). Not the city’s problem.

Instead of demanding subsidies, since apparently they're not profitable at all, they can either scale back operations or they can frick off to somewhere willing to pay the extortion rate.

My first thought is to tell them to "Go Pound Sand".

It's also my continuing and final thought on that matter.

I will give Moreno credit here. Rather than saying "frick NO" and dealing with the accusations of racism. She just demanded access to their finances. Knowing damn well they would never, ever, not in a million years allow that. So she said NO without saying NO.

Really smart actually.

But in her letter responding to the Essence proposal in March, Moreno said she was concerned that the festival was on track to repeat the same mistakes from 2025.

Boy this is gonna cause some meltdowns among the left in New Orleans who support Moreno and Essence

Bingo.

And no event whose goal is to “promote black excellence” should get a penny of public funding.

Nevermind that since 2022 Essence Festival has been owned by Disney - let Disney foot the bill.

It’s always gotten substantial subsidies to put on the show

The city/state have been ok given that essence also was a big win in the very slow summer

Then recently it became less of a win when the team running it got worse and worse

Question - in all seriousness - for the people who would know Does the city or state pay organizers of things like JazzFest, FQ Fest, Mardi Gras parades, Sugar Bowl? I'm not talking about absorbing possible costs - like police fees - but make direct subsidies to these other events?

Mixed

Sugar bowl, Super Bowl, conventions in lower demand windows etc….
