Can we just pay them to not come back
Posted on 5/25/26 at 11:36 am to Cell of Awareness
They are confused. They should pay NOLA to put up with that event.

They simply need to say no.

Kinda late in the year to be setting up for July 4th.
I smell a swindle.

For those interested in hard numbers, Essence Fest has an economic impact between 300-350 million for the region but gets roughly 2 million of tax payer support.
Jazzfest has an economic impact between 350-400 million and gets basically zero dollars in taxpayer support.

I wonder if they pay Skankfest.

They should move that event to Jackson, Mississippi.
The culture is stronger there.

Essence means the fundamental nature or most important quality of something—the core feature that makes it what it is.

quote:not really. They are only good at taking advantage of the White guilted that afraid to say no to them.
Squeezing as much out of the government and tax payers as possible definitely qualifies as one of the traits they're excellent at, so this tracks.
Remove that, and they won't be good enough to get anything from anyone.

A lot of cultural enrichment takes place at it, no doubt

Pay them that to keep it out of NO!
Actually that’s not a bad scam. Tell every city you are going to bring a massive black festival to them unless they pay up!

20 years in downtown NOLA hotel biz...
essense is an extremely poorly run event, always has been. its lasted so long because it was (and is i guess), a one of a kind event with historically a solid lineup. ticket sales have almost always been robust. and the crowd is not the same as bayou classic, the tickets arent cheap and generally the attendees spend money. they dont tip but they do spend.
the lack of professionalism on the production side is now becoming an issue, so the city should step in and prioritize the 2026 event and keep it from being another shite show. a minimally well run event is attractive to the city especially in july, but a shite show is not
helena's got this

I was going to say it's probably cheaper to pay them that amount to go somewhere when you figure in lost tips, crime, additional police presence, etc ....

Of course NOLA softens the headline for this, making it seem like a one time thing instead of them demanding $12 million each year.
Even a one-time payment of that amount, I would have called them and said: "Best of luck with your event" and hung up the phone
Posted on 5/25/26 at 1:21 pm to Cell of Awareness
They pay this and I'll be sure never to spend my money in that city again. Straight racist.
