Like 1/7 to 1/10 of those players are carrying their weight. Crazy

That's wild (and correct). I fact checked it because I was shocked at the cost. (I thought we were spending like 4.5T this year (on all government spending), but per the treasury, we are spending 7T, 1.8 of it on social security. I think the 4-5T I was thinking of is revenue from taxes, fees, etc.)
Treas. Dept. Link (Spending Categories about half way down)
I think a big part of the issue--for gov't and private insurance--is the cost of healthcare in the US is often 50-100% more than other developed countries. See (just for quick reference) Peterson Foundation Study. And unfortunately, we are no healthier for it.

I would generally agree with your take.
It seems we've lost the ability to debate differences of policy and opinion in an intelligent, logical manner, while having respect for our opponent in the debate. Instead, it's just insults or violence. The inability to articulate ideas in general looks different depending on the party and I agree it appears to be worse in one over the other, but the lack of decency and respect for human dignity has become pervasive, IMO.
I also think there are many different issues that cause people to join/vote for different parties so you might have an individual Republican not agree with everything Trump says/does, and the same for a Democrat--it's just they're most aligned or agree with certain key issues -- but that's a bit different than your topic.

It's a frustrating situation. IDK the answer.
No need for insults or fighting words, although I'm down.
And I voted for DT. I just happen to research and think for myself instead of believing every headline that gets fed to me.

fair take

One thing I noticed about people who seem to have strong empathy for immigrants is they don't know shite about immigration.
I worked in the field so I know a good bit.
And for the record, since folks are assuming I'm sure, I am not a democrat.
I agree with you. But I think DACA is the exception regarding not being admitted but eligible for employment.
That said, they had to be here as little kids more than 15 years ago, so they have had a ton of ICE and USCIS interviews by now.

I don't really trust Woody much either. But I also don't trust fake Mike the Tiger governor to know enough about college football to handle this.

These people have no RIGHT to work here.
I agree with you there. It is a privilege one applies for. I just think letting people work is better than letting them stay here without the right to work, especially when there is an abundance of open jobs Americans are not filling.
quote:
ry me a river. no foreign worker should be on auto-renewal, this is just common sense.
and the whole idea of bringing in foreign workers is to fill a need. therefore, it should always be on a temporary basis so we can remain flexible to the overall need. how are we going to create more jobs for americans if all the foreigners are on auto-renew?
Oh boy..
1) These are not temporary foreign workers but people who are here legally and likely will continue living here, so having the ability to continue working to support themselves, pay taxes, etc., is a pretty good thing imo.
2) I agree with supporting American jobs. I don't think that is in conflict with allowing Americans-to-be the right to work--there's a lot of jobs remaining unfilled...

Maybe they should find employment in their home countries?
These people have been admitted to the United States and most are in cue for green cards. I agree people should be able to work in their home country, but the perspective you offered is a bit short sighted.

No auto renewal means they want to look at them first.
Actually no. They were still "looking at them" before. The automatic extension was to fill the gap until the government had an interview and made a decision.
It wasn't an automatic approval of the renewal application. It was an automatic extension until the government could make time to decide on the renewal. Which could take over a year.
DJT Cancels Auto Extensions for Immigration Employment Authorization Applications
Posted by Play_Neck on 10/29/25 at 4:29 pm
I know folks have very different views on immigration, including very different opinions about the number of folks per year to admit--and that's fine. But this policy makes no sense, outside of just being mean and stripping people of the legal right to work.
As background: to be authorized to work in the States, one must have a basis to apply for work authorization, which means the person was already admitted and vetted by ICE/CBP. They might have other paperwork pending to change their immigration status (e.g. from Visa to green card), but they're not an unknown rando who snuck through the border.
Previously, if someone applied to renew their employment authorization, they got an automatic extension until the gov't made a decision on the application, because the government often takes more than a year to make a decision, and in the meantime people need to work. (Otherwise, you're incentivizing criminal activity, etc.)
Today, the administration cancelled the temporary automatic renewal policy, allegedly to "protect Americans." I see no way this protects Americans. It harms employees and employers and the economy.

From the gov't:

New rule prioritizes vetting, screening to protect public safety, national security
WASHINGTON – The Department of Homeland Security has announced an interim final rule ending the practice of automatically extending employment authorization documents for aliens filing renewal applications in certain employment authorization categories. With this rule, DHS prioritizes the proper screening and vetting of aliens before extending the validity of their employment authorizations.
Aliens who file to renew their EAD on or after Oct. 30, 2025, will no longer receive an automatic extension of their EAD. There are limited exceptions to this rule, including extensions provided by law or through a Federal Register notice for TPS-related employment documentation. Ending automatic extensions of EADs results in more frequent vetting of aliens who apply for employment authorization to work in the United States. Reviewing an alien’s background more often will enable U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to deter fraud and detect aliens with potentially harmful intent so they can be processed for removal from the United States.
“USCIS is placing a renewed emphasis on robust alien screening and vetting, eliminating policies the former administration implemented that prioritized aliens’ convenience ahead of Americans’ safety and security,” said USCIS Director Joseph Edlow. “It’s a commonsense measure to ensure appropriate vetting and screening has been completed before an alien’s employment authorization or documentation is extended. All aliens must remember that working in the United States is a privilege, not a right.”
USCIS recommends aliens seek a timely renewal of their EAD by properly filing a renewal application up to 180 days before their EAD expires. The longer an alien waits to file an EAD renewal application, the more likely it is that they may experience a temporary lapse in their employment authorization or documentation.
The interim final rule does not affect EADs automatically extended before Oct. 30, 2025.
I don't know about f*cked. But I was pretty concerned watching the Clemson game. Clemson looked really bad imo, and outside a couple nice plays on both sides of the ball, I felt we won because of Clemson's mistakes more than our quality of play (pretty much what Dabo said after the game). In another universe, if say Clemson came out and looked like a Top 5 team, I would've been less worried even if we loss but played great, as well. La Tech wasn't reassuring.
this doesn't seem good longterm for the country
