They lost their Usaid funding let them go to Atlanta, atleast most of the attendees won’t have far to travel

According to the article most of the money would come from the state, so they could expand it to Baton Rouge and the parishes around New Orleans.

I can guess Jeff Landry’s position on this.

A lot of cultural enrichment takes place at it, no doubt

The twerking contests and tipping empowerment seminars are awesome.

And no event whose goal is to “promote black excellence” should get a penny of public funding.

When is the event to promote white excellence?

The city is taxing Mardi Gras Krewes, why not tax Essence Fest organizers?

Atlanta is better set up for it anyway and I mean no disrespect. It’s financially more stable and it has better infrastructure.

ATL would do a good job putting it on… and no one would attend, the locals in ATL like coming to New Orleans and others don’t want to go ATL in July.

Does the city or state pay organizers of things like JazzFest, FQ Fest, Mardi Gras parades, Sugar Bowl? I'm not talking about absorbing possible costs - like police fees - but make direct subsidies to these other events?

To some extent yes. We were set to give LIV golf $5 million in direct subsidy, not counting the course upgrades.

the crowd is not the same as bayou classic, the tickets arent cheap and generally the attendees spend money. they dont tip but they do spend.

Essence crowd spends $1000 at a nice restaurant and tips $20

Bayou Classic crowd cooks wings in their hotel room

Bartenders at the dome have tips that average around 12-13 percent of sales. Concerts games etc

Essence is around 5%.

If they can’t make it on their own after all these years it’s time to cancel it

They are asking for that money from all sources not just the city.

Still, that is an obscene amount relative to the economic impact.

$2 million a year seems reasonable. Not 10-12.

And yes the quality of the festival has gone down over the years.

Honestly Essence should put Morial in charge of the festival. Whatever his politics, the trains would run on time.

Wouldn't the city save money and just pay the hotels and businesses close to what they make for the weekend and save the city money from additional police and waste pick up, and send it to Atlanta or a rotational city endeavor.
