Does LSU face a legitimate threat?
All things considered.

With the flag being burned this morning it is clear that someone is willing to commit a serious/symbolic crime to prove a point. Will it go any further?

Is it really a federal crime to burn a flag?

I'm serious...I dunno, just asking.

re: Does LSU face a legitimate threat?
would you consider mayo packs being strategically placed on the ground in high traffic areas as "legitimate"?

serious federal crime

Which would be what? I'm not saying it was wise, but I think cutting down and burning the flag is theft/criminal damage at MOST.

And no I don't think we face a threat. I think it was an isolated incident, and typically extremists claim their flat-burnings, not run away.

the only thing they have done so far is vandalize an item less than $300, so it's not even a felony. It's not illegal to burn your flag, but it is illegal to vandalize someone's property.

ThE case you're referring to applies to personal ownership of flags only. That flag-at Lsu- was a flag owned by the state

Case does not apply to situation at hand

Hell yes. That's the ultimate sign of disrespect to the country.

eta:

Okay I found out it's not:

No.

The US Code provides that it is illegal to burn the flag, but the United States Supreme Court has held, several times, that burning the flag is a protected form of speech.

If you think about it, it really is speech. Which is why burning the flag is so controversial. When one sees the flag burning, it is not just a piece of cloth, it is a representation of the American country and its values.

Those who would support a constitutional amendment to protect the flag believe that the symbol is sancrosanct, and that there is never a justification for it.

Those who oppose it believe that, while it is just cloth, the burning of the flag is the strongest possible statement that America's values (like the flag) have gone up in flames, and that the leaders no longer stand for the values made dear by the country and its framers.

In any event, at least for now, you cannot be arrested for burning the flag (absent some other violation).

Are you an idiot?!?

First of all, federal crimes are very few, because regulations of crime is a traditional state power.

Second of all, being on STATE property would not make something a FEDERAL crime. That's just nonsense.

That's one of the most powerful crimes one could commit. I doubt the perp does not understand the gravity of his crimes
