Try not to complain to much about family. We have no family at all around and holidays can be a lonely time for us.

I've spent my fair share away from home on the holidays like most.

I try to not let it bother too much, the bickering and what not. I just sit back, smile, laugh at the things they argue about, and smoke the turkeys and ham with my brother over good beer.

Next year I'll probably be back downrange from what I'm hearing so I'm going to build some memories while I can with my SO, family, and kids.

I do have to say that the SO's family don't bitch. We get together just about every Sunday at MIL's. She does dinner every Sunday.

So tomorrow, I'm going to pass bird day with the SO's family and just chill.

Just tell that,"Somethign came up" and they will need to keep the rental car and drive to Shreveport to meet everyone. Then take your wife out on your PTO day and PIIHB

Your problem is that you did not establish importance or urgency in your arrangement to meet them. Had you said "hey we'll meet you guys at 2 so we can make it to Shreveport by such and such time, which is important because we have to do X or meet Y before Z." But because you didn't do this, they basically said "frick it, baxter12 and wifey don't have anywhere to be, they can be a little late, let's enjoy our brunch".

Inconsiderate, to be sure, but some people don't care what others think. You have to create tighter boundaries for such people, and if they cross them, make them feel the consequences (in this case, you leave their fricking asses behind, but you have the great excuse of "we have to be there by such and such like we said, we couldn't wait for you")

I’m freaking over the sister in law- headed north to Shreveport agai tomorrow. Every year we do a fried turkey and ham! She decided she wants a roasted turkey but it can only be done in the oven not a roaster. Inlaws or normal folks not OT ballers only have one oven! Mother in law gives in again! My wife is miserable as she will be in the kitchen 7-10 hours a day. ( she goes with the flow)Who the hell need breakfast casseroles and fresh fruit every morning thanksgiving week? They bring it on themselves! In laws need to just say screw it FYI at least the father in law has a fully stocked bar!

Wife and I both take 1/2 day of PTO. Of course as always with them something comes up. Reason being they just had to have a late brunch at Breenan's.

Sounds like you're dealing with irresponsible people

This sounds like the same kind of selfish inconsiderate shite my former in-laws would do. It made me loathe Thanksgiving and Christmas because it was always something.

Whenever I think about all the money I spent on a lawyer, I just think that I don't have to deal with this bullshite any longer.

My in laws are great.

My parents are fine and we get along but they’re a pain in the arse to schedule with. They operate like the in laws in the OP. My main thing is that they’ll come stay with us on holidays and then leave to see her sister that lives 45 minutes away and want me drop everything just so that they can show off my kids to her sisters. Not to see their grandkids, just to show them off.

I’d feel better if they didn’t use us as a hotel.

honestly, you are just talking about a couple of hour delay on the whole process....just go with the flow and don't make yourself miserable over the shite.

Brunch at Brennan's sounds infinitely better than a roasted turkey in Shreveport. In-laws sound like they know exactly what they are doing
