Everything is suspect these days.
They may have had adequate water but GOT LOST.
He was a guard so he had a gun or is the type to own one possibly.
If he had a reason to kill her THEN off himself he could have done that anywhere.
It's simply a case of a couple that didn't quite make an episode of 'I Shouldn't Be Alive'.

Here's the deal for all you inexperienced, the second you feel like your are lost, stay right fricking there. Don't make it worse. Find nearby shelter and hold tight. It's your best chance of getting found.
I mean damn, they left a bed and breakfast, how far do you have to go to not be able to find a waypoint to return?
Also, they probably went into the canyon thinking water might be there.

Ive never been but did anyone else notice reports that they we on Maze Loop Trail? Their car was at the trailhead. Thats not a very remote area.
If they were in Maze Loop area they were never further than 5 miles from asphalt road let alone unimproved road/trail. There are houses and canpgrounds within 2 miles of the trail.
It doesnt sound like they made an effort to be found easily.

I can't imagine being in a position to have to kill my girlfriend and then myself. Literally any other option sounds better. Walking in any direction until I die, firing the gun wildly in the air, getting dysentery from shitty water - all of that sounds better than murder-suicide.

Roger that. These two might have just been planning on a short day hike, but managed to get offtrail and disoriented. The next thing they know, they're spending the night with minimal food and water and no emergency gear. Maybe inappropriate footwear ... those flip flops or sandals might be okay for a 1/4 mile on a trail, but completely inadequate for cross country hiking.
Joshua Tree is big. It's over 1,000 sq miles, but it's kind of rectangular in shape. I doubt it's more than 20 or 25 miles north to south. I-10 runs east/west along the southern side and a less traveled CA highway borders the northern edge, not to mention the USMC base at 29 Palms. There are also roads running through the park.
Who knows what really happened to these two, but it seems like it could have been avoidable.

A severe dehydrated state can cause delusions and hallucinations. I think this is more likely than a planned suicide pact.

Ok after checking out a few maps of the park I'm having a hard time figuring out just how this happened.
Pick a direction, any direction, and start walking. You will hit a road and people within 6-10 miles.

I'd say at least 99% of people out hiking for recreation, especially in parks out west, are not carrying a gun.
It's better to carry that weight in water or food or not carry it at all.
Predator attacks are very rare and there are ways to minimize them, and even then only mountain lions and brown bears are true threats.
