he was probably listening to her in relation to the directions... Asian girls have the worst sense of direction, ever....
every time we are driving and somewhat lost, if i listen to my wife, we get even more lost... at this point, i do the exact opposite of what she says and we end up back on track...

Dude if I'm going any place that's "remote" then I'm taking a pistol. Why wouldn't you? It's a resource, a tool, an object that can be valuable.
But for these people, seems like they were totally unprepared and unskilled in any way.

Neither of those will work out for you in J-Tree. J-tree is more than a 1000 sq miles of desert. It is indeed easy to get lost there, every one of those yucca, rock formations and wadi starts to look exactly the same.

Its an 87 mile hike between desert hot spring an eagle mountain. If they would have picked a direction and traveled at night in one direction they could easily have gotten out.

This type of thing has happened before.
There's actually a Matt Damon / Casey Affleck movie with this exact same plot. Two friends go on a casual day hike, get lost and things go from bad to worse as they are unprepared for the inherent dangers of the remote wilderness.
{Spoiler Aert below}
Much like this case, Damon kills Affleck in a mercy killing and then while plotting to kill himself, stumbles on a road with traffic.

87 miles? That is not an easily getting out situation. In July it's well over 100 every day in the desert. You run out of water and you're done, not walking 30 miles a night
Bringing a gun and getting lost is definitely something inexperienced hikers would do. I say that because you can easily avoid whatever wildlife you would encounter in the desert, but this guy was probably scared of snakes or something, which you should just avoid, not try to shoot. Inexperienced hikers who planned for a day hike which is why they had little water.

It's so sad that the vast majority of people out there have no idea how to use the sun, Moon, and the pole star to find their direction. Hell, my "internal compass" is pretty damn accurate when it comes to finding my way.
Also, people should take the time and study the general layout of the land and relation of landmarks to each other before going on any hiking or camping trip.

I'm not sure that travelling in one direction in the desert at night is as easy as you think it is

Exactly, It only say they were missing for 3 months. Not they survived 3 months.
It also says they were found in a canyon. Maybe they fell into the canyon, tried to survive for a week or so then decided to end it.
Either way, it’s a horrible situation.

See the moon? It rises in the east and sets in the West just like the sun. No Moon out? Can you find the little Dipper? The star at the end of it's handle always points north. Too cloudy to see moon or stars? Clouds generally move west to east.
