Not in an large uninhabited desolate area, I would not leave without a weapon, probably a knife and a gun
Until recently, guns were illegal in National Parks.

Correct, I still carried. Had a pack that made it easy. Extensive hiking taunt me it was better to have one. I've had several encoubrwes with animals and sketchy people on trails

It was more than "ran out of water". The coroner suspects she had a bad fall and gashed her head open down an embankment. Her head was wrapped in cloth. They suspect it was a mercy killing and he took his own life over grief. Her family agrees.

People have a skewed idea of risk, far more people have died falling in the shower than hikers killed by other people or animals, by a large margin. It is like the irrational fear of flying when flying is the safest mode of transportation.

While this may be true, being prepared is more important than taking risks. It's also nice to have a firearm with you in case you do get lost and the only available food source is walking or hopping.

That's like saying showering in more dangerous than hang gliding or scuba diving... because there are more deaths.

Agree. Also, should you fall and get hurt the sound of a firearm reaches much further than the sound of your voice.

This. Only hikes I will do out here in July are short local ones and I'm on the trail by 4:30 am before the temps start rising and done hiking by 6:30.
