After checking out Google Maps, it is only 1.5 miles from the trailhead that they used to the entrance pay station as the crow flies.

Unless I was in grizzly country, there is no way I am adding pounds with a gun. experienced hikers count grams and ounces and a gun would be stupid weight.

Man that's terrible. People need to realize any thing can happen when you are out in nature. Even with today's technology I have maps in all my vehicles and boats. Ever since I was a kid everything that moved had 4 or 5 different state and regional maps. Everyone should take a MAP reading class at some point in they're life. A compass is a must as well.

I remember it being very strange. I think it was an experimental Gus Van Sant movie. I think the three of them basically went out in the desert with a hand held camera, no script and just walked around a few days. It has some odd camera work. And literally half the movie is just filming them from behind as they aimlessly walk around getting closer to death from dehydration. It's very similar to his movie 'Elephant'.
So very weird and probably not very good, unless you really want to see an experimental indie movie with odd camera angles and virtually no dialogue that shows Matt Damon and Casey Affleck slowly dying.

It is Very unusual, probably 99% of hikers out west are unarmed, in general the back packing culture is largely liberal. I have handguns, but would never take one on a hike, it is just extra weight that could be replaced with something much more valuable to have like more water.
