Maybe they found a staircase in the middle of nowhere and the faceless man pulled the trigger? SAR stories suggest it's not a suicide.

Edit: My wife also thinks I'm fricking weird because I take a flint and iodine pills for a day trip just in case something bad happens.

Out in the middle of nowhere in a park is the easiest place for someone to thrill kill you and never get caught.
I can see carrying a gun, although I don't own a handgun myself.

Maybe on the little 1.5 mile loops you can take from the road but I do fairly remote hikes several times a year and it's not uncommon to see people carrying, definitely way more than 1%. I do it myself because I have kids and there are bears and mountain lions out there.
As to the people calling bullshite because it's CA, gun control laws or not, there are almost 10 million gun owners in CA. That's more than the total population in almost every Southern state, so I don't understand why it's so unbelievable that he would be carrying a gun.
