Contemplating job offer in BR - Should I move from Covington to Prairieville?

Or should I just commute?

Time with family would be main reason. 2+ hours commuting every week day sounds like a drag. Could I find a nice neighborhood with nice schools?

Job would be near Industriplex Blvd. We’re doing public school. Online ratings for Dutchtown school district seem promising. Covington schools are not that great anyway. Kids are elementary school age.

Any wisdom, advice, insight, or brutal insults appreciated

They’re plum out of Dutch in Dutchtown.

There are good private schools in Baton Rouge, but if you want public schools, Prarieville should be fine.

I knew someone who commuted from Covington to Denham Springs and it was like 1.25 hours each way. And you barely even scratch BR traffic to get there. I would personally rather live in the worst neighborhood in BR than do that commute.

I’ve driven that I-12 stretch many times and it sucks, not that I-10 into BR wouldn’t suck but far less road time.

That commute will suck either way.

I also haven’t heard the most complementary things about Dutchtown HS but my own area has some severe problems despite the ratings.

Prairieville has a new high school if that's a draw to you. Top notch facilities. I don't live there but I've heard good things about Ascension schools.

The commute blows arse. I still do it though. I sold my house in BR years ago and will not ever move back.

I would move heaven and earth to keep my commute under 30 minutes each way.

My job is fully remote. Covington is an area I am looking at moving to once the kids finish high school. BR has great areas, but overall it’s a dump.

The commute would be max pain. Move to Ascension. The public schools in Dutchtown are fine, even very good or better than Covington. Go look at the state test scores.

Ascension Parish is actually wealthier than St Tammany, although I'd agree that the nicer parts of St Tammany are better.

Depends on where your job is. I worked north of downtown and the drive to my house in the Jefferson / Highland area of St George took an hour every afternoon. It was not enjoyable. No longer in BR and don’t miss afternoon traffic anywhere there.

I'd like to figure out one day what my wife and I paid to not commute long distances. It's well into the 6 figures, but we didn't have 4 kids or anything like that. The kids are grown now, but I come home and take a 30 minute nap at lunch sometimes still

Fairly painless commute down Airline. 15 minutes. There's almost everything in Prairieville right there near the parish line but you can be in SBR quickly if Ascension doesn't have it.
