You need advice on whether you should spend 2 months out of the year driving just to make a "living"? 4 hours a day where if something happens at home you are helpless and useless.

I’d only consider it if the pay/opportunity is massively better. It’s hard for me to imagine leaving St. Tammany for the Baton Rouge area, and I live in Prairieville. It just seems like a lower quality of life.

Prairieville is nothing but a sea of disconnected neighborhoods with no heart or personality. There’s no real sense of community. That said, absolutely move if you take it. The commute would be a nightmare.

Our oldest just graduated from Dutchtown. She had every opportunity she wanted from school in terms of sports, extracurriculars, AP classes, etc., and is well-prepared for college. Our youngest (entering 1st grade) is at a private school, but not because of anything wrong with Pville schools.

Convinced that is the only solution. Every week another person says adios. Even MS is kicking our stuff in and has been for over a decade.

As someone who lived in Prairieville for a while and then Baton Rouge proper, we moved back to Covington a few years ago and we would never consider going back to BR again.

I'd like to figure out one day what my wife and I paid to not commute long distances. It's well into the 6 figures, but we didn't have 4 kids or anything like that. The kids are grown now, but I come home and take a 30 minute nap at lunch sometimes still

While my current “commute” is about 15min, I’ve had some as short as 5min. It’s hard to describe how liberating it is to be able to think “huh, I need to take a shite, and I have a bidet at home…” and just fricking leave without it fricking an hour and a half of your day

I commuted from Madisonville to LSU every day for 6 months. It’s bad enough with out wrecks and wrecks happen way too often.

If the job is off industriplex and you’re currently living in Covington, you’re commute will not be 1 hour if you factor in peak traffic times. You are honestly looking at closer to 90 to 105 minutes one way with peak traffic in both cities.

Sometimes I think about packing a lunch and I'm like, nah I don't feel like it, I'll just come home and eat.

I’ve driven that I-12 stretch many times and it sucks, not that I-10 into BR wouldn’t suck but far less road time.

Lived near Parkview Baptist for a couple of years. My job had me pretty much covering the entire region. The good thing about my job was when everybody was coming in to BR, I was leaving. I 12, I 10, across the bridge, everywhere. If I had to choose death by traffic jam, then I’m coming up I 12. At least that way you have theoretically multiple options in even though it still sucks. I12 westbound, I’m not bout that life. And for obvious reasons, I’m not mentioning going across that bridge every day or north BR. Good luck.

Buy a Tesla and use FSD every day. I do 1.15 hours daily and it’s a dream. Do not move your family out of Covington.

ETA: that is one-way

That's 3-4 hours daily though. I don't care if I'm driving or not, you are losing 25% of your life during the week. If you have to, I understand, but I wouldn't do it voluntarily.

I drove from Hammond to BR every day for 20 years and it was pretty horrible. Adding 30 minutes to that drive would make it unbearable

I was just thinking about my commute when we lived off of Juban Road. It sucked. It was an hour every evening even though it was only 15-17 miles.

To Covington, you've got to get through that and then you still have another hour.

job is fully remote. Covington is an area I am looking at moving to once the kids finish high school. BR has great areas, but overall it’s a dump.

Huge ambitions. Leaving one shithole to move to a slightly nicer turd

One of my favorite little luxuries is to send DoorDash home and meet it there. With no prep, it makes my time away from the office feel both longer and more relaxing.

Job would be near Industriplex Blvd. We’re doing public school. Online ratings for Dutchtown school district seem promising. Covington schools are not that great anyway. Kids are elementary school age.

How old are your kids?

Prairieiville High School is brand new, and state of the art. Like a Junior College.

Plus there are quite a few new schools in Ascension Parish, particularly in the Prairieville area.

How much are you budgeting for housing?

As someone who "drives" 28 to 32 minutes one way, twice daily, this.

I'm currently at 86 % FSD. For those who don't know, that means 86 % of the time, the car is driving me.
