They can request that you show your receipt, but if you just keep walking the store employee has no legal authority to stop you and is actually committing multiple torts. The fact that you're on their property mean absolutely nothing.

When the store demanded to see the receipt I could either show it or just walk away without doing so. When I walked away the decision was left to them. They elected to bring the police into the matter so it became a constitutional issue as the force of the government was involved.
My initial question was it legal for the store to demand to see my receipt? Either it was or it wasn't. Maybe I should restate it as ; Do I have aright to refuse to show my receipt when asked. Then the issue becomes do the police have a basis to demand to see the receipt in the absence of any illegal action by me.

I stopped going to Walmart when the self checkout started videoing every single transaction I scan. I see no reason for Walmart to have footage of me and every single item I purchase on camera.
