Think it's a shopkeepers privilege law. They have some rights detaining you but it's pretty strict. Have to see you conceal merch, have a constant visual the entire time to make sure you did not leave it somewhere, then witness you attempting to leave without paying. Granted when I worked retail in 2000's this was the rule but could be different now.
Once you pay for that merchandise and receipt is in hand, it's your property even if you in the store. The poor guy making minimum doesn't know or care, he's just doing what he's told. He also made his decisions in life to do that job most of the time.
Constitutional law only pertains when law enforcement shows up I'm pretty sure. Cop is going to detain you and get your side and Walmart's side. A complaint has been made against you so he has to investigate. Should be once he sees on camera you not stealing or hears from Walmart they did not follow you all over, your good to go. Pretty sure most times, they just want you to show the receipt to hurry up with the investigation. Here is where the cop is assuming your being a dick and will drag it out to annoy you.

Ummmm, you wouldn't happen to be the type that tell the cops you're just "traveling" when pulled over for speeding are you?
Because you sound like the type.
Because you sound like the type.

You know, I don't think they do. This is because the transaction is over. The items in the possession of the customer are property of the customer, whether he/she is in the store or not. While not a constitutional issue, it's probably some sort of imprisonment.
I’m curious about this as well. When you’re walking out of the store you are no longer “shopping” at their business. You’re leaving. Seems like they can’t force you to show your receipt or detain you, but I would think the off-duty cop at the door can.
That said, OP is still a tool.

To an extent.

It doesn't. The Constution's Bill of Rights is only applicable to the federal government, and to the states via the 14th Amendment. Private businesses are regulated via Acts of Congress and other regulations, NOT THE CONSTITUTION.
You miss the point. I refused to show my receipt. Once the store brought the police into the matter it became a constitutional issue. Did the officer have a right to demand to see my receipt in the absence of an actual allegation of a crime? Constitutionally he did not as this would be an illegal search and seizure with no probable basis. The store cannot make a probable cause there was a crime committed for refusal to show a receipt absent any other action which was not captured on one of their 100 security cameras in the store.

Are you still on their property and therefore subject to their policies?

Yes, they can.

It's scary that some people disagree with this.
Found the OP
What a goober

I’m not reading 8 pages to see if this has been posted but they always check receipts for items not bagged
It’s not a big deal, I make sure those items get scanned first or last to make them easier to find for the person checking

Factually incorrect.

Not a legal standard.

Stores are not held to a probable cause standard.

Fine dinner conversation for your next militia meeting

Again.... answer my question.... why is this such a big deal to you???? First off you sound guilty of something and second is that it takes like three seconds for them to do this. This has nothing to do with rights or anything. This has to do with YOU just looking for something to bitch about. Get a life. Moron.

If you have only two bags and nothing unbagged they would still demand to see the receipt.

This thread has been fun to follow.
The fact that something so small is such a big deal to someone is pretty funny to me.
When we go to Walmart I always have it handy to show them if they ask. 9/10 times they don't ask when I have it ready for them.

No you don't have to show your receipt at Walmart.
Yes management knows you don't have to show your receipt at Walmart, most don't care and have someone check receipts anyway.
Walmart POLICY the last I saw it did not require OR allow stores to check receipts.
But dude, frick Walmart, shop somewhere else. I don't show my receipt anywhere, I just walk on by and don't stop with exception of Sam's/Costco. At the warehouse stores you agree to have your receipt checked as part of your membership.
