Constitutional lawyers : Is Walmart demand to show receipt legal?

While exiting Walmart after checking out and paying a cashier for my purchases the receipt sentinel asked to see my receipt. I politely said no and kept walking. The sentinel attempted to grab my arm to stop me and demanded to see my receipt. I said you have no right to do this and continued walking out the store.
The sentinel then ran outside to report this to the police officer stationed by the doors. He stopped me ad told me i had to show the receipt. I responded that they have no right to see the receipt as I was not accused of a crime.
The officer then said you have to show it to me. I told him unless they accused me of stealing there was no probable cause. The sentinel then confirmed they were not accusing me of stealing.
The officer then asked why I was making such a big deal of this. I told the officer that demanding to see my receipt was a violation of my constitutional rights and walked off. He did not try to detain me.
I know the sentinel was only doing as management directed but I believe the whole premise of stopping everyone is constitutionally flawed and they should only stop those actually suspected of a crime.
What say you civil libertarians?

The Constitution generally protects you from unreasonable search and seizure by the government.
Walmart is not the government.
I am not a constitutional lawyer and this isn't real legal advice, but I did stay in a Holiday inn last night.
Edit: my advice to you is if you don't like Walmart policy, don't patronize their PRIVATE business.

I don't disagree, but why make an issue of this?

I'm guessing this is some gotcha post related to a business requiring masks - where you're going to say "why not just show the receipt, it's a minor inconvenience"..."why not just wear the mask, it's a minor inconvenience"
But WalMart is a private business, they can regulate your process shopping through/leaving the store. If they have reason to suspect you're shoplifting, they can stop you and the cop would have probable cause to investigate.

They have the right to “demand” - it is their store. However, you are not legally obligated to follow their request. They may also be able to trespass you from the property if you cause a scene.
Sams, Costco, etc are different because you agree to a membership co tract when you renew every year. Somewhere in that contract is language allowing them to demand your receipt.

Asking to see your receipt isn't a violation of your Constitutional rights.
If they detained you without cause that's another matter. But they didn't. You walked away without issue.
Now, can the store ban you from returning to their establishment because you didn't follow their procedure? Sure.

I’m no attorney. But I would guess that until the merchandise leaves their store, they have a right to confirm it has been rightfully purchased.
