I would have left immediately with all of the money and started a new life.

Would be hard to spend without drawing suspicion from the IRS. I'd try though. Might buy a Benny's car wash and see what I could launder

Just use the cash for gas, groceries, etc. Buy scratch off tickets and bet on sports at the casino. Government isn't paying attention to your losses. You can claim more winnings than you really have and have them taxed at a lower rate.

We desperately need tax reform in this country. It doesn't make sense that the government can take away part of something that you find. That's like going fishing and having to give away half of what you caught.

having $2.5M in cash means you have like $5k in cash

there is nothing you can do short of trying to fly to the Caymans and praying they don't pick up the money on an x-ray

they've made using large amounts of cash insufferable and you basically need a criminal who can launder it for you to do anything short of declaring it

Jeez man just open a safety deposit box and dip in here and there for whatever you need. Haven’t you seen Get Shorty?

For those talking about the previous owner threatening me if I find the money. I tell his attorney or representative, "I found 6.5 million. If anything unfortunate happens to me or my loved ones, $1 million will pay to have your client and his family slaughtered."

The attorney scared normal people by informing them of who he represents.

Pretty simple.

This was my initial thought also, but the article says the initial offer was $600k and they countered and finally got $1.2 mil. If the attorney really scared them, do you still think they counter?

If a mexican Cartel says the money is theirs' I think I'm giving it all back. No way in hell am I countering them after the initial offer of $600k.

Finally, once the feds got wind of this would they not investigate if the money was illegally obtained?

I don't know, something seems fishy here.

First off, where are you finding a hitman lol? And you now are going to commit a crime yourself?

If it was illegaly obtained money, its more likely to be someone like a cartel or mafia where its not just one guy.

Sure, but you pay the guy to open the safe not to look inside.

Except that this wasn't found it was "earned". This was basically this guys hobby job or maybe his only job.

Any income that is not your own and is not specifically gifted to you, is basically earned income is it not?

Depends on the person and the context/timeline of the negotiation. It's a weird situation.

It definitely wasn't theirs. They wouldn't ask or offer anything besides their lives to be spared.

You could spend almost $200K a year in case for 40 years, that's like $300K a year in pre-tax income. Don't want to carry around cash, get a few credit cards, pay the bill with money orders bought with cash.

Was the guy's name Llewelyn Moss? If so, there's a guy with a bad haircut and a bolt gun looking for him.

I’d report it, pay taxes, and then invest it. Within a decade I’d probably be closed to the original $7.5M and it’s all free and clear.

Sounds like some woman with a big mouth let the cat out of the bag. If it wasn't for her, nobody would have known about this and the guy could have kept the entire sum. This is why you NEVER tell a woman anything you want kept secret.

If you reported finding 7.5.

Then suddenly had an increase in standard of living. Well you already drew attention to yousrself so the FBI and IRS would probably have an eye in you and you would get caught

If I was a lawyer and heard someone found this much cash, I may contact them, claiming to represent the owners. I negotiate giving them about 20% and pocket the rest.

Even though I was not originally involved, I would still end up with fat cash. My imaginary client would, unfortunately, get nothing.

I'm sure the group that puts $7.5mil in a storage unit will be shaking in their boots at Joe Blow threatening them.
