re: Being/becoming a public school teacher in America is the worst career possible

About to finish year 13. Over 80k. It’s not a lot but certainly not the life of poverty that some make it sound. Benefits are meh but I don’t pay into social security. Can retire at 55 with a pension for life that is 70% of my best salary, age 60 with 80% or 65 at 92%.
It’s a mentally demanding job, but only because you have to be at the top of your game all day. Parents and kids are fine as long as you have reasonable communication skills and don’t “feel attacked”. I feel purpose everyday and believe I have an opportunity to impact.
It’s certainly not for everyone but it’s far from the worst career in America

Teachers complain about money but they are financial morons. Teachers have the best (and most absurd) pension plans in all of America. So you make a little less (very little when you consider they actual hours spent working) but get a massive retirement in the back end.
Meh. They have a pension. It's not absurd. Source, my wife is looking at retirement, after 25 years.

Agreed. But the world needs ditch diggers too.

It all depends on where you work and who you work with.

Right. No free period either, I bet. Sounds like slavery.

There's definitely worse jobs out there but there's a lot less incentives to being a teacher than there used be and I'm not talking about pay. With zoomers, you have to deal with a lot of crap now. No work ethic, you're constantly disrespected, not to mention with lower income students there's a strong chance of being attacked or cursed at.

You've clearly never worked in the medical field.

The worst part (from my experience) is dealing with the over-educated administrators. The pay, schedule, and workload are pretty commensurate for what we do.

You forgot state benefits, 3 months off plus an arse of holidays and retire when you’re 55.
I have two friends that are in the school system and they have it made.

I'm a high school science teacher in Louisiana. I love it. I'm fortunate that my financial situation was favorable before I became a teacher so the salary isn't a big issue for me.
I'm also fortunate to work for a great administration.

You don’t seem to understand the pay or benefits despite several folks pointing out the issue in your argument. Are you trying to prove the education system failed you?

45k is the low end of pay (in my district anyway) these days
The kids suck now I’ll give you that one.
There’s no more germs than before
My insurance is pretty dope actually. No premium (with wellness points) and covers just about everything I need it for.
“No lunch hour” the frick?
I mean don’t get me wrong there’s issues now and getting out is definitely on the table for me but none of them are what you listed.

Covid hasn’t been a thing for a year where I am. The lunch hour thing sucks but I’m on the clock 7:45-3:15. That’s 7.5 hours
If you are punching in at 745 and out at 315 you probably aren’t a very good teacher.
I’m not arguing that teachers have it the worst and deserve to whine as much as some do. But the hours for a good teacher are not just the school hours. Duty, extra curricular, clubs, lesson planning, grading, etc. are all part of the job for a good teacher that occur outside of normal school hours.

Are you trained to groom kids into freaks at a young age in college or once you’re employed by the government? Serious question. Are all of your co workers groomers ? Public school teachers are NOT the same as they were 40 years ago.
