TVs are better. So are microwaves. Hit or miss with ovens. You spend enough, and you can get a pretty awesome one.

Everything else is cheaper and worse.

Is there a certain Speed Queen washer/dryer set you recommend?

I have a fridge in the garage that the previous owners left. They built this house in 1981, but they already owned the fridge and brought it with them from NJ. It's probably 45 years old and still keeping my beer ice cold. Granted, it's olive green, but it still works.

Speed Queen

One thing noticably different about them versus today's washers and dryers is the capacity. It's easy to forget how small the machines were in 20-30 years ago. Speed Queen washers are about 3.2cu ft capacity. Modern machines hold 4.5-5 cu ft.

I voted for the Speed Queen and my wife wanted something else. I protested until she asked how much laundry I was planning to wash and fold. You guessed it. She won.

Appliances are not meant to last these days. Throw hot water heaters to your list. They look nicer and have cooler features, but they will break in 5-10 years.
I am 53 and have owned homes since 1996.

I have never replaced a hot water heater, oven, or refrigerator due to not working. I have replaced one dryer and one washer.

Maybe I am living a charmed life

Stoves? They're about to take away your gas Stoves.

Is this really a thing? I just don’t see how they can unilaterally say “no one can have a gas stove.”

Practically anyone who knows anything about coffee will tell you that a percolator is the worst way to brew coffee. And that’s not hyperbole. Literally the worst.

—-This take is nuts. Perked coffee is the WORST. There’s a reason nobody uses them these days.

Not a chance ! First fridge I bought in 84 last 20+ yrs. I’ve had 3 since. For the record, don’t buy anything Samsung!
Almost the identical experience with washer and dryer!

Get the Speed Queen classic for the washer. I can't remember the model of it or the dryer. We've had ours since 2019. The only issue was a beeping noise so they replaced the control board on the washer since it is still under warranty.

We also purchasd the Speed Queen washer for my wife's vet clinic since they wash a shite ton of towels. Works like a champ.

Washing machines are way worse now. Nothing will ever beat the turn the knob and start your washing of the old school washers.

Buy a speed Queen mine will do a load of laundry in no time with an old school agitator and knobs and it’s less than 45 min

I like our Bosch we bought three years ago. It’s held up well enough and has some nice features to it.

I have a Bosch as well. Super quiet compared to what we had growing up.

The little rubber noise dampening toe kick flap on the bottom is a POS though. Wore out pretty quick. Cheap to repair but annoying.

The sensor faucets need to be added to this list. I had sensor faucets for the kitchen and laundry room but replaced them when shadows kept setting them off. Also if the power goes out, they don't work... Not worth it.

30 years ago, people complained that appliances were made better 30 years prior. Buy a nice appliance, not some cheap, flimsy piece of plastic crap. Do a bit of research. And odds are it will last as long as you want.

Agree with most of what you said. My microwave is 29 yrs old and still kicking. My fridge was 30 yrs and replaced it for style last yr. Actually we got scared it would fail and we would not be able to get one due to covid cutbacks

I do think DWs are better though. I used have to turn the LR TV up when we ran DW in the kitchen. Now the new one is so quiet I can barely tell it is running standing next to it…

I just replaced a 10 year old dishwasher with a Frigidaire and it has a 30 min setting and an "energy saver" setting that is 85min run. It's quiet enough it has an LED that shines blue or green light on the floor so you can tell if it's running. It's MUCH better than the unit it replaced. You could make arguments that induction cooktops are not an improvement over natural gas (pros and cons there) but they are definitely better by a lot than prior electric stoves. New microwaves that also do air frying add a good bit of value to the kitchen.

Fridge and washer/dryer are cheap GE units from when we bought our house in 2008 and are still going. Plastic in the shelves/drawers of the fridge is falling apart tho. We haven't had any problems with the HE washer or dryer other than the drain/crap collector on the washer is in a terrible spot.
